as young kids, erika and her siblings’ mother began teaching them ASL, considering it a useful life skill for them to have. but shortly after they’d started to really start getting the hang of it, their mother died in childbirth. after her death, erika’s older brother stopped signing, finding it too painful. however, erika and her little sister continued, taking formal lessons and practicing together. not only was it an homage to the memory of their mother, but it proved very useful in the home and in school for them to communicate without their father or the staff he hired overhearing their private conversations. despite the estrangement between erika and her sister, erika still practices and utilizes her sign language, volunteering a couple times a month to teach art classes to a few deaf kids in the community.

jaxon learned ASL during his last couple of years while serving in the marines. in his downtime, he’d study a little book he ordered, and practiced with a guy in his unit that had a deaf sister. but it wasn’t entirely unprompted. toward the end of his 2nd to last tour, a very close friend of his lost her hearing from an IED explosion that would have killed a handful of guys in jax’s unit if it wasn’t for her quick thinking and acting. as a result, she was medically discharged, and they continued correspondence. he knew how hard the injury and adjustment was for her, and he wanted to show his support. now that jax is discharged too, they still hang out regularly, and jaxon’s slow signing is gradually getting better. needless to say, his effort and gesture meant the world to her.
