'x reader' is a narrative device. All Readers are characters. I personally don't think Readers should have set appearances or ethnicities unless the story absolutely calls for it (like for example a Reader character in a JJK story has a high likelihood of being Japanese because of the setting), but it's inevitable they'll have some degree of personality. Back story also makes it more interesting too. It helps give you a more vivid world to be invested in. Every time the Reader does or says something, it's indicative of personality (why they did this instead of that). At the very least it shows authorial influence.
You're not moulding dolls from clay, you're reading a story with a predetermined direction. If you don't like one particular Reader character, there are so many other stories out there.
