Could you give a fandom noob some tips on how to stay in the fandom? Because I want to jump ship with all the crap going on, but I really love Hudcon just not all of this.
Or is this part of every fandom?
I will say most fandoms when you engage on social media will have this type of disagreement and schisms if they get big enough, from Harry Potter to BlackPink (this a trend not a hard and fast rule). Not every fandom is like exactly like Hudcon; 1) because not every fandom believes that two people are genuinely dating but won't come out for a variety of reasons, and 2) every fandom has a slightly different culture based on the people in it and the celebrity themself. I will give you a real talk and you can make your decision (obviously we would love for you to stay though).
First, fandoms are a microcosm of society. There are people who are nice, mean, logical, emotional, dramatic, nosy, aggressive, fun, light-hearted etc. you will get that with any group - fandom or no. Different personalities can cause friction, but they also contribute to the diversity of thought/creativity too.
Second, when you are a fan of real people, the fact that they are people is paramount. People are not perfect, people make mistakes. Sometimes those mistakes make us feel certain ways or make others feel certain ways about us. Hudson and Connor are also very new, if they put their foot in their mouth about anything during their first year of fame - the world knows about it. It's the downside to instantaneous success. Every fan has an opinion for the most part, when celebrities do/say something vague the biases will come out (even for us).
Bottom line: fandom is supposed to be fun. It's essentially a hobby that should add to your life. If it's not fun for you and doesn't add to your life then you need to take steps to either refocus on the parts that are fun for you (or work on your expectations for it), or you need to leave.
If you want to stay, here are a couple tips I do when I start to get anxious about everything. I call it returning to my roots!
Reflect: Why did you get into the fandom? What content did you engage in? How did you engage?
Act: Start doing that again. When our fandom experience changes so much that we start wondering why we are even here, it means we are not engaging in a way that's fun for us. But we're already in the fandom! So at some point along the way it must have been fun - try to go back to that.
Filter: If there are certain things you don't want to hear about or see, filter those out as much as possible (block the tags, block the people etc.). If it's hard to do because it's all muddied together - then try instead to limit your time so you can go to certain blogs/accounts and scroll for their content you do want to see. Many of us here in the space use tags for our own organization, you can also use those to search our blogs just for the content you want.
I hope this helps, Anon :)
