Do you think people who stan famous people / fictional characters so hard to the point where theyre sending people death wishes have lost touch with reality. As in they hate their own life so they take tv shows and other worlds too seriously. Like i get having different views for ships and things but when it gets to the point that youre wishing death on people because they have a different viewpoint on a fictional character it's like dont you realise youre taking this way too seriously? I also think stanning can be unhealthy. Its a lot of time and energy dedicated to something that in the end is fictional. Like if there's still tvd fan accounts that are really active, years after it's over i do find that a bit strange.

No, I think they want to be shitheads and think that these are easy excuses to behave that way. I think if you are a fan of something and continue to participate in fandom once it’s over that’s fine, but I think if you’re using your fandom as an excuse to be a dick to people then that is your aim.

Something I wanna say about Grant’s statement: it is not just a PSA. It is an apology and it should be taken as such. He owed Candice (and perhaps us as well) an apology, and it’s not because of his silence. It’s because whether he knew it or not, he did engage in behavior that empowered racists, silenced/shamed fans of Iris, or that was intended to undermine his relationship or connection with Candice on several occasions. These are all things that are influenced by whatever biases he has that he absolutely has to unpack himself before he points out the racism of others. Blocking and speaking condescendingly to fans, most of them of color and who were respectful who were concerned over the show’s negligent treatment of Iris and the lack of support on set as a whole for Candice. Changing his Instagram highlights collage in 2017 to hide that his most popular photo was one of Barry and Iris. Liking the occasional SnowBarry post (yes, he did this). Generalizing his entire cast in certain discussions when he should have mentioned Candice specifically, therefore erasing her. These are active things he did. So yes, I believe his words in his video are sincere, and I am accepting his apology, but I also want his fans to understand that what Grant did was more of a problem than what Grant didn’t do. I want his fans to understand that he can be a good person, but he can also do and say things that are hurtful to black people. I want his fans to understand that just because he loves Candice and #WestAllen, doesn’t mean he is not immune from internalizing what our anti-black society has conditioned into him. Let’s hope he’s been realizing that.

I was just reading some asks you received about SW, and I know nothing of it, but isn't this "if you ship this you're [insert horrible thing here]" mechanism pretty prominent in recent tumblr fandoms when they are big enough and with big contrasting ship? Just using certain words that are supposed to maintain the purity culture just as an excuse to exclude the ships that (simply) are not liked? or is it SW like... super extreme?

no, it’s pretty prominent but only in fandoms that cropped up from 2016 onwards where the tumblr lingo/attitude was there since the very beginning - it happened for voltron and it happened for SW, I don’t know if it’s going on with SU as well but it’s also lowkey happening in most fandoms that a) are large enough, b) have been around from 2016 onwards and where the discourse can be polarized pointing one ship as The Best And Most Pure And Woke. SW isn’t extreme whatsoever in that sense and actually voltron was way worse than SW in that sense. some of that admittedly also happens in other pre-established fandoms - I mean the ‘if you ship this you’re condoning BAD THING X’ attitude - but it’s not so endemic. (or I mean, I’ve been in asoiaf since 2011 and I did see that attitude crop up more than once ie ‘omg if you ship san/san you condone abuse’ or ‘if you ship th/ramsay you’re a rape apologist’ etc, but there isn’t ONE ship that has been deemed The Wokest and it’s large enough and with people interested in all the characters/sides of fandoms with that many characters there’s no way the discourse gets polarized like that. but that attitude happens anyway sadly.)

I know overlap in FanFiction writing is inevitable because we are all drawing from the same source material, but taking specific ideas or headcanons that are posted in fandom and running with them to write your own fleshed out fics without crediting the original idea is stealing FYI 😘

It makes me sad that fandom hates Barry and Iris’s daughter and wants her dead for taking focus from their ship. I can’t take those who claim to hate her for mistreating Iris seriously either because they will forgive Barry immediately once he kisses Iris or sings to her or whatever romantic gesture he pulls. I’ve realized this season that our fandom isn’t exempt from misogyny or racism just because they ship WA.
