I am in love with ships like this.
Julie Plec on Kat’s costars asking to be paired up with Bonnie.
All these conversations about Bonnie’s ships brings me back to this funny little TikTok. Julie Plec and Caroline Dries were furious Kat was well liked by her costars and had amazing chemistry with them. They hated the idea of her being desirable by anyone. It’s rather ridiculous.
✨️The main character in our hearts✨️
Let me give a real hot take: you cannot talk about Bonnie’s mistreatment without talking about the mishandling of Bamon and you cannot limit Bonnie’s mistreatment to just her not ending up with Damon. The former is a hotter take than the latter but it’s true.
Actually one more hot take: ignoring the fact that Klonnie should’ve happened (since kevin was building it up) because you prefer Klaus with Caroline is contributing to Bonnie’s erasure.
Nvm one more: Ignoring the fact that bonkai was given the realistic villain treatment due to RACIST writing is again contributing to Bonnie’s mistreatment. She can’t have a villain that cares about just her? Nah let’s make him give her trauma meanwhile delena and klaroline gets cute moments 😍😍😍!
I get the genuine Bonnie fans who don’t like Bonkai. I really do. I just think that some of them don’t get where Bonkai shippers are coming from. Bonnie’s friends ‘rebel’ through their problematic romantic/sexual relationships, even to the detriment of their personal relationships and the group accepts this eventually.
Bonnie just never had that. There were obvious points in the story where she should have pulled away from her friends or had a dark arc but she wasn’t allowed to.
Kai Parker was another opportunity. He was a character that hadn’t picked her friends first. He was Bonnie centric. He actually doesn’t work without Bonnie (see Legacies). He doesn’t care for her friends. He is a loner, doesn’t care about social harmony past getting to his goals and that needed to rub off on Bonnie. He could have been used to facilitate much needed self centeredness in Bonnie.
Bonkai fans vary on whether or not they should have been endgame or not but there is an understanding of how Kai is an equal who would have given Bonnie the toxic romance her peers got. Like… even Matt got with Rebekah.
Also, if Bonnie was white or wasn’t written by racists, she suddenly wouldn’t have PTSD from Kai in season 6. She would have PTSD in season 1. If realism wasn’t a thing that only matters when it comes to Bonnie’s romance relationship and no one else’s, the others would be plagued with flashbacks and none of their relationships would have happened.
It’s the way that Bonnie can actually fight back against Kai too that’s ignored, making it mutual, but other girls just endure violence from their love interest and the narrative doesn’t focus on it nor show consequences. Everything is just different when it comes to Bonnie.
I ship almost every other person with Bonnie except the ones she was canonically with.
