Fanfic author biographies
In response to @bettsfic‘s great post socknography: the importance of preserving fan creator biographical data on the importance of preserving fan creator biographies, I’ve updated my AO3 profile page with a proper bio based on their template, and I encourage everyone else on AO3 to do the same.
It’s an inspirational post about the way fanfic will be perceived in the future and how we should be preserving information about who we are and what we do:
If you are a fan creator, your fannish personal narrative matters. telling your story helps preserve the metatextual history of our genre.
The post includes a template for what a bio might look like:
introduction (name/alias, age, location, pronouns, occupation)
accomplishments (degrees, personal history)
fan history (fandoms you’ve been in, timeline as a fan, how you were introduced to fandom/fanfiction, what does fandom mean to you – this is where your fan narrative goes)
fandom participation (popular fics/posts, involvement in fan events/communities, side blogs, interviews, etc. 3 & 4 might be one and the same for you)
spotlight (which of your fics are most important to you/would you like others to read and why? what are the stories behind your favorite fics you’ve written?)
find me elsewhere* (links to tumblr, twitter, insta, etc.)
policies on fanart, fanfic of fic, podfics, and translations
*you cannot link to ko-fi, paypal, patreon, or amazon on ao3/fanlore per the non-commercial terms of service
Here’s what mine looks like now:
Hi! I’m Fontainebleau. I’m female, 52 years old and I live in Scotland in the UK. Professionally I’m an academic working in history, with a number of non-fiction publications to my name.
I’ve been in various fandoms since the 1990s – Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and 2000AD primarily – but I only started writing fanfiction myself in 2016. My main fandom is The Magnificent Seven movie from 2016, though I’ve written in some other very small book-related fandoms.
If you only read one of my fics, The Fire Sermon is the one I’m most proud of, for the questions it asks and the style in which it’s written.
You can find me on tumblr at fontainebleau22.tumblr.com – I blog mostly about The Magnificent Seven and writing, and I am always thrilled to hear from other fans.
I am completely happy for anyone to podfic, translate, remix or interact with my fics in any way, and if you do I’d love it if you let me know when you post it.
If you’re a creator with an account on AO3, please do consider adding an informative bio along these lines, because we are important and what we do is important and we should make sure that information about fanworks is preserved.
