Gentle reminder that even if you love a story, you are not obligated to participate in its fandom. You are not obligated to participate in all its media content.
You love a story. You met it through book form, or movie or show form, or as a video game, a comic book or graphic novel. You've loved it since it first released, or a friend recommended it, or you saw snippets on social media and got drawn to check it out. You might love it years after it was the hot topic in its genre or format.
No matter the content, context, or conversation, you are not obligated to participate because you love the story. If the adaptation does not thrill you, it's okay to turn it off. You can still love the books, I promise. You do not have to also love the movie or show. Heck, you can even love book or episode 1, and hate the rest. DNF is so real.
Most importantly, you do not have to police others.
Examples (going by the misery I've seen in fandom talk spaces): you loved The Last of Us as a game. But maybe you don't like Pedro or Bella. Maybe HBO's writing just didn't do it for ya. You don't have to watch it. And you don't have to go on tiktok and tumblr and find every post praising it just to comment, "Ew no it's terrible." I promise, you really don't.
You grew up reading Percy Jackson, you love that awkward little demigod. You don't have to love the Disney+ show. If you can't handle the actors not looking how the book describes them, it's okay. You may turn it off. And you don't have to go online and find posts loving on it and say, "You're wrong, it's trash."
You don't have to police others in fandom.
Participate for yourself. Read, play, watch, share, because storytelling is an escape. And you're allowed to be happy there. If you're not, you're making it a job for yourself. A burden.
To be the person entering someone's comments just to say, "Liking this content means you're stupid/wrong/etc" and trying to control what others enjoy is to be that poor kid forced to go door-to-door trying to convince strangers to dive into your religion. If you love something, live reflecting that and people may be drawn into it through you. If you hate something, don't let it own your life.
Imagine how freeing it is to live and let live, to enjoy what makes you happy and to not mind when others like or dislike things differently from you.
Starting to think the only way I can consume bts-related content is by removing myself from fandom spaces entirely. Sorry to use this as a space to rant but the constant black/white thinking, competitiveness to prove who's the biggest fan, cherry-picking performative activism, worshipping etc is all becoming too much to the point I feel sort of burnt out and ready for a break. I know you've addressed these aspects a lot on here and I really appreciate the honesty and space for discussion.
I got into bts during their boy with luv comeback in 2019 and they quickly became my whole life -- I basically only thought about or spoke about them, to the point it was unhealthy. I stepped away from the fandom a little bit in 2022 after some aggravating experiences but this year I got back into them because I loved Namjoon and Jimin's solo releases, and remembered how much comfort I took from their music and content. I started venturing back into army social media spaces.
But oh my god, it's honestly unbearable out there and it's exhausting. I'm so sick of the way armys worship and idolize these seven men like they aren't even human. They put them above their values and dedicate their entire lives to them, and don't see anything wrong with that. I'm a little apprehensive for 2025 because who knows what the fandom will look like by then? I guess it's just hard to reconcile being a fan of the group but not wanting to be associated with the stans. Do you have a balance between enjoying the content but not being driven crazy by army? lmao
I mean, the only way you can truly enjoy the content is to move yourself away completely from fandom spaces, particularly those focused on discourse. For example, I can't avoid army or the daily issue even if I follow some Jimin accounts because of course they're bringing up whatever is happening, usually criticism. And then it adds up and before you know it, you get angry everyday so where does that leave us?
A solution, at least from what I've noticed and if you want to still be aware of what's going on and enjoy the experience, apart from paying attention to content, would be to follow focused accounts on something very specific. Like strictly career updates or more on the fun side which usually post images and videos.
But apart from that, take breaks, make sure you find other stuff to be interested about and not just this. I try to curate my twitter feed and tumblr dashboard with lots of other areas of interest, mixing it up so I don't get sucked into BTS discourse and everything adjacent to it. But then, without asking, I still get the info in my inbox which is not always ideal, but that's on me and having an active blog.
While this is just one in the long litany of bad anti-anti posts that piss me off, I think this point right here is worth dissecting:
Because, like, that’s not how it’s been from what I’ve noticed?
From what I’ve noticed it’s more that so many in the social circles surrounding/creating that porn actively enourage minors when they actively participate (rather than just “sneaking a peak”) in those circles instead of the mature thing and kicking them out/not treating them as peers on this subject (Because they aren’t).
Or when they ignore groomers and predators in their midst because of that aforementioned over-closeness with minors along with the sort of shit that should raise red flags becoming such normal behavior it ends up practically invisible.
Or the fact so many fandoms of all-ages media are so, so fucking incorrigably horny on main that there’s a pressure to participate in that if you want to participate in the fandom, even if you are a minor.
I could go on.
Like, y’all just hate young people and are terrified of facing accountability for how you treat them. Which, like, okay boomer...
Fanfic author biographies
In response to @bettsfic‘s great post socknography: the importance of preserving fan creator biographical data on the importance of preserving fan creator biographies, I’ve updated my AO3 profile page with a proper bio based on their template, and I encourage everyone else on AO3 to do the same.
It’s an inspirational post about the way fanfic will be perceived in the future and how we should be preserving information about who we are and what we do:
If you are a fan creator, your fannish personal narrative matters. telling your story helps preserve the metatextual history of our genre.

Hi! I’m Fontainebleau. I’m female, 52 years old and I live in Scotland in the UK. Professionally I’m an academic working in history, with a number of non-fiction publications to my name.
I’ve been in various fandoms since the 1990s – Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and 2000AD primarily – but I only started writing fanfiction myself in 2016. My main fandom is The Magnificent Seven movie from 2016, though I’ve written in some other very small book-related fandoms.

Today is the day we share the theme suggestions for this year’s Steter Week!
We had a lot of response to our poll, and want to thank everyone for spreading the word and voicing their opinion on what they’d prefer to see as daily theme suggestions. Without further ado, here they are:
November 24: Season One Rewrite
This could be anything from Stiles getting bitten instead of Scott to Stiles accepting the bite offer from Peter in that infamous parking garage scene. Take season one and rework it how you’d like to have seen it happen, with a Steter twist!
November 25: Established Relationship
Do you want to make a gif set of Stiles and Peter getting married? How about drawing them adopting/having kids? Maybe you want to write about them arguing over mundane domestic issues as they navigate living together. Give us all your established relationship Steter feels.
November 26: Smut
Here’s where you can go all-out creating the steamiest, sexiest Steter fan work you desire: Daddy kink, BDSM, sex pollen, erotic dreams, anything and everything related to Stiles and Peter getting it on.
November 27: Supernatural creature /Fairytale /Mythology AU
We had a tie on these, and couldn’t decide which to use. So we chose all three! What if Peter wasn’t a werewolf, but a vampire instead? How would Snow White work if Stiles were the princess and Peter were the Woodsman? Got a favorite Greek (or Norse or Roman or whatever) mythological tale you’d like to see applied to Steter? Go for it!
November 28: Stiles is pushed out of the pack
Sometimes we just want to see Stiles hurting emotionally and/or physically. What pack is he pushed from? The Hale pack? The McCall pack? The Hale/McCall pack? It’s up to you. What happens after he’s pushed out? What does he do and who does he turn to? Why was he pushed out? This could go as dark as you want or as sweet and hurt/comfy as you like.
November 29: Soulmates, Mates, and Anchors AU
By far the favorites of the theme suggestions, here is where lasting, deep, and abiding love and need come into play. What causes Stiles to become Peter’s Anchor? When did they find out they are each other’s soulmates? Are mating bites your favorite thing ever? Give us your spin on these awesome tropes!
November 30: Dealer’s Choice
None of the theme suggestions catch your fancy? Maybe you have something completely different in mind for Steter week. Space pirates? Gender and/or sexuality exploration? Movie or book crossover? Historical AU? Create a Steter fan work that makes you happy!
Reminder that these themes are only suggestions for the people who prefer to use them. You can post multiple works on Tumblr/the collection, and it is not required to create something for every day.
