I received an anonymous message today regarding Apritello Week and I just wanted to address something very important. The message was from a Raphril Shipper and it was very polite. They were expressing their concern that certain Apritello fans have taken part in the bullying of shippers of other ships. They were worried that by promoting Apritello Week I might be condoning this behavior.
Let me be very clear: I do not condone bullying. If you’re one of my followers and/or an Apritello Fan, I ask that you be kind to others in the fandom, please. Please. It doesn’t take effort to ship what you ship and to allow others to do the same. To seek out those with different preferences just to harass them suggests a lack of both empathy and an understanding of what Fandom is all about. We’re here to have fun.
It’s okay to express your opinions on your own blog, but this can be done without attacking others. It’s okay to say, “I don’t care for this ship because [insert thoughtful, coherent explanation here]” without saying, “Fans of x,y, or z are [insert thoughtless insult here].”
I also implore you to think before sending hate to another user’s inbox or leaving a nasty comment on a post. They’re just doing their thing. Let them! We’re all here to enjoy ourselves, even if we disagree! How many people would say they joined Tumblr just to insult or intimidate others? Not many, I would hope!
I guess what I’m really trying to say here is: Be a good person. It’s so easy. Really and truly. If you see tags on your dash that you dislike, it’s easy as can be to install Xkit and Blacklist those bad boys. A whole blog gotcha down? The Unfollow and Block buttons are just a click away! No negativity required. *Click* Problem solved!
I do believe that kindness begets kindness. Be your best you and know that if hate ever comes your way, you at least did the right thing.
