I hate when a character is in canon, an imperfect parent but then the fandom decides to write them as the most abusive worst parent ever. It's so OOC! Like, I'm sorry, but all real parents make mistakes. That's just how it is. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised because fandom is where nuance goes to die.

real. i also feel like its people heavily projecting their experiences with their own parents to these characters. yeah people are free to project and shit, but sometimes it gets to a point. not everyone had shitty parents like you (general) and acting like every parent character who doesnt live up to your standards and expectations of what a "perfect parent" should be like is fucking annoying.

I think some people don't understand that it's not always about nuance or even misunderstanding the characters, themes, etc - it's about what makes an entertaining and satisfying story. And for a lot of people, fanworks, meta, playing with dolls etc, involving dark things like abuse is exactly that. A person can understand that the characterization is OOC and still write a fanfic around it.
