Something I’ll never understand.
There’s still a portion of the fandom who hates Arima, but Furuta is almost worshipped. Wtf is happening here.

Oh god, I hate Fanon Kaneki so much.
Kuroneki the whiny uke.
Shironeki the sadistic badass.
Sasaki the weakling.
Akaneki the cold badass that doesn’t care.
NONE OF THESE ARE TRUE.
Kaneki was, during the first half of the series, someone very conflicted about things. He was struggling to adjust to being thrown into a violent world, and what we have recently learned about his childhood abuse makes it clear why he would have a problem with being violent. But he still decided that he was willing to fight for the people that matter. He trained hard, defeated Amon, almost beat the S-rated Bin Brothers, and fought tooth and nail against stronger opponents like Tsukiyama and Yamori. He wasn’t just some wimp that cried and whined, he worked hard to change things.
His post-Aogiri self was a trainwreck. He was deeply traumatized and acting out in distinctly self-destructive ways. He pushed away so many of the people he loved, was engaging in serial cannibalism and murderous vigilantism, playing Judge, Jury, and Executioner while still holding human lives as above those of Ghouls, and pretty much in a very dark place. His friends were terrified for him but uncertain of how he help, and he was spiraling further and further into madness. He himself has now admitted that he was suicidal, that he WANTED TO DIE at V14. Kaneki was in a horrible place.
While the pressures of his lost memories and uncertainty weighed heavily on him, Sasaki was in a relatively good place. He had become a stable member of society, with a career and a home, with a surrogate family and many friends. He was no longer withdrawn, becoming social and easily participating in the life that Kaneki usually avoided. But for all the good things he did have, he was still running away from his problems. He had great strength, but feared it and held back.
This current Kaneki is impossible to gauge now, since he’s not in a normal situation. He’s in a traumatic life-or-death situation, rightful angry at the monster that has ruined so many lives, and dealing with so many things emotionally and mentally. He hasn’t had the chance to stop and process things, much like during the Aogiri Arc he was basically running on adrenaline right up until the others showed up. He’s very likely due for a crash, once the high comes to an end.
But there’s no indication that he is some kind of selfish, cold-hearted monster. He’s a troubled young man with a lot of rightful anger, with a ton of shit he’s dealing with. He hasn’t had a chance to process it all.
Give him time before you label him “Uncaring”.
