just realising that lockdown was probably the best time for me to have a tangled hyperfixation where I stubbornly decided I wanted to be barefoot all the time like rapunzel (as well as painting, singing RTA/TTS songs, wearing long dresses with my hair in a pretty braid) because it was the one time I was inside and at home 90% of the time like that was SO PERFECTLY TIMED I'm so glad it was in lockdown

the tangled the series writers really said ‘what if we made a gay-as-possible lady-in-waiting character that was the daughter of a witch and wanted to be a knight?’ and then they wrote ‘waiting in the wings’ and like just that alone would be brilliant enough but then they made her a HOT confused disney villainess whose power / donwfall was anger and impatience & fear of herself that she needed to learn to accept & channel properly thru love for a woman, and for that, me and rapunzel are thankful [prayer hands]

eugene write-up:

-n-b trans man, ironically, he’s been using a certain potion that comes specifically from the dark kingdom to give him his LUXURIOUS extremely well-taken care of moistruized conditioned facial / body hair, along with his deeper voice. he never had top surgery but the potion acted as a kind of puberty blocker bc Magic Why TF Not, and he’s been taking it since shortly before he changed his chosen name from ‘eugene’ to the more androgynous ‘flynn rider’. (when he goes back to eugene---it’s an understanding not of the name he was ‘born with’ but instead an understanding of the child he was when he first picked that name for himself. the child that wanted to be an accountant and that wanted to take care of his fellow orphans forever and Adopt All Of Them and be a good father.) like t, eugene has to take this potion every day, but at this point it’s just a part of his self-care routine. (it does, however, taste rather unpleasant. potions usually do.)

-lance is his brother but they’ve both betrayed each other more times than they can count. it takes a LOT for them to be able to trust each other AND love each other during tangled the series, but they do eventually.

-eugene has issues with women, relationships are usually born of need for attention on their part and saftey AND validation on eugene’s own, which leads to toxicity like what you see with staylan. eugene LOVES women tho, loves impressing them, loves being around them, loves flirting with them, and has a specific type when it comes to men---men who own their sexuality, and are kind of intense and scary. eugene honestly falls in love pretty easy and canonically can over a period of days---you just have to be an extremely intense person who is Nice to him and shows him attention. if you want to be his NEW DREAM, though. well, you have to see him as a person and not just the jokes & the charm & the grumpy pushing-people-away-but-really-begging-them-to-think-you’re-cute-and-worthwhile-ness. 

-eugene is extremely vain and fucking loves self-care, but he has a very low sense of self-worth bc he never feels ‘chosen’ due to being abandoned, due to being an orphan. this makes it hard to cope with his dad----plus, his dad doesn’t know ANYTHING about him and assumes he’s a woman and a princess, even tho he does say some shit that makes eugene’s heart melt about how he ‘always wanted a son.’

-eugene is extremely, extremely smart and extremely, extremely accomplished as a thief. he has been ALL over the disney universe, he knows an insane amount about the world at large, he has maps of everything (and is a very good map maker), hideouts everywhere, he speaks a bajillionty languages and dialects, he’s smart and he’s brave he just has enough common sense and foot-in-mouth disorder and love of jokes and comedy and being ‘the cute silly one’ that he OFTEN ends up playing the fool, because he would rather be the smoldering cute boy than the mastermind thief & manipulator who canonically hurts & traumatizes people---bc, wouldn’t you?

-eugene is really bad with money lol he gets money, he immediately spends it all on self-care items and new clothes bc he doesn’t know when someone is going to take it from him. he’s extremely particular about the fineries and the possessions he does have---and while he IS a theif, if you take something of his without asking, eugene will be extremely distrusting of you in the future bc of his own trauma.

-eugene’s new dream wasn’t just rapunzel, it was the idea of having a HOME and a place to belong. eugene wasn’t just in love with rapunzel---he was in love with the idea of a family, a person, a fairy tale romance where at the end he got the castle and the love and the princess, u know? he’s wanted his whole life to belong somewhere, and with rapunzel, he felt like. he could be MORE than flynn. he could be eugene, he could be accepted, he could be loved, and he could be safe in that love without it being taken away from him.

-for this reason and the host of rapunzel’s own issues---rapunzel and eugene don’t start out ‘together’ in the beginning of tangled the series. they start off as non-monagamous dating ‘friends.’ eugene doesn’t want her to have to marry the first person she’s ever met---and eugene, also, doesnt’ want to feel like he’s disappointed her if he’s not as good as she expects.

-at the end of the series, eugene does NOT become a guard. he becomes king of the dark kingdom, and opens up the kingdom to orphans everywhere, going back to his real dream as eugene---adulty adult dad shit of accounting and city management. he still sees rapunzel, often, but HER dream has ALWAYS been to explore the world, and she does so with cass who has become a knight. eugene has ALREADY explored the world and gone on all his adventures. he doesn’t need to do it again (except to make ammends, maybe). so he’s happy in the dark kingdom, every time rapunzel comes back <3

"Do you like to sing, Cass? I used to love it. But I only knew the one song... I had to make up my own!" She laughs, as if it isn't sad she's never heard music played by anyone else before. It had been so overwhelming when she had first heard it---she couldn't help but chase Eugene into the square and dance with all her might. She wasn't particularly good----even now, she refused lessons to impress the nobility. If she felt a song or heard one---she wiggled and shook, she let the spirit of the song help her bounce and run and giggle with her partner. It was energy, it was art, it was sensation---and she had been stifled for so long it bubbled out of her like lava spewing from a volcano. All that sunshine energy---spewing out of every pore and quirk of her smile.

She'd love to dance with Cass like that. Or just hear her sing--fall asleep to the sound of her favorite lullabye, her soothing, full-bodied voice.

rapunzel, princess of corona’s, main flaws:

so here are some basic things my rapunzel does that set people off: -

she assumes so much. and then she apologizes for assuming,a nd then keeps assuming -

she's WAY too generous, spends way too much time DOING things for people instead of actually spending time with them -

she's very touchy feely, will constantly hold ur hand even when ur not in the mood to be touched. 

she overcompliments people when she's anxious. -

she bottles up her feelings when everything is not exactly as she pictured it, but still gets terse and not her usual gentle self with them. she pretends everything is fine, and then later blows up at people, to the point she pulls her hair etc. it doesn't hurt her---but it would hurt a normal person. -

she in general does not stop talking when she is nervous. 

-she in general wants ALL her loved ones to be together CONSTANTLY. 

-she NEVER wants to be alone. ever. especially when she loves someone. 

-she protects other people---if they try to protect her, it's 'cute' because OBVIOUSLY  she can protect herself (roll eye emoji) -

she's extremely bossy and particular, but also has no understanding of how things actually work -she's bossy and particular about making things / paintings / inventions that have already been done before, she puts in painstaking thought and time into plans that have MUCH simpler solutions

 -she never learns to trust her friends, no matter how many times she says she trusts them

-more than anything, if ANYTHING goes wrong, she always chides her friends for not trusting her---but then, she still? pretends to blame herself for not being a good enough leader? and she DOES blame herself but also at LEAST give ur freinds credit that they did SOMETHING, even if it was SOMETHING wrong!

“I know why you did it.” Rapunzel says, very slowly. She can’t face Elsa with what she’s feeling---and especially not what she’s saying. She smiles, very big, very wide, full of joy, and mirth and all the happiness that she is supposed to represent as The Lost Princess, the kidnapped child, the perfect child, the one who they loved so much they celebrated her, every year, and never lost hope---

And it breaks her.

How every step, every smile, every strand of hair and strand of fate---was leading her to one thing, the way she always wanted it to, and yet she doesn’t quite FIT.

Quickly, her face scrunches, full lips bob as if she’s ready to cry, quivering---her eyebrows furrow as she wipes a hand over her eye, still dry.

“I mean. I could never really understand!  I can EMPATHIZE---but, I have both my parents. And they love me. So much. Just-the-way-I’m-sure-your-parents-loved-you.” Her hands wave, her body contorts, an inelegant, whimsical dance betraying her uncertainty, and doubt. 

“But... Sometimes I just think....my parent’s Kingdom is a lot like it’s the tower I grew up in. I don’t know if you know this---but... I kinda grew up in one single room all my life. And it was a nice room! A big room! Sometimes, my Mother even brought me books! And I was allowed to paint the walls however I wanted! But it was still.... a room. In a tower. With so much else out there, that I could see, but not touch, and it scared me, but at the same time, I felt like... It was where I was supposed to be.”

Rapunzel twirls her hair around herself, folds curls into her hands and pulls them tight and taut like rope.

“I’m so happy, I can’t stand it. To be around people that love me. That don’t know me, at all, except for what they want me to be, which is kind of exactly how my Mother loved me, in a kind of... selfish awful way, not that the people who love me are selfish and awful, no! They’re good, and kind, and... of course, I love all the people in my parents’ Kingdom.”

Rapunel finally turns, takes Elsa’s hands in her own, without fear---she’s known too many witches to be afraid of a girl just like her---”I don’t know why I want to run away so badly from people who love me. But, I know why you did all the same.”

“Did your Mother tell you about the ruffians, and quicksand, too?”
