tips for writing scars 'n' such
barometric pressure dropped, my ankle feels like its going to bloody explode jeez Reminder to non-scarred people: scar tissue isn't always just visual. Internal or external, it changes how we move and what we can do.
That scar on your characters cheek you put there for looks (very nice, by the way, looks awesome) has changed their face.
They can't open their mouth propperly, or they can't open their eye as far. Their smile is lopsided because one cheek can't pull. A nerve got caught in the scar tissue and now it is tender. It tingles often, they flinch when its touched - it aches in storms. Or the opposite: the nerves of the area were damaged and now they can't feel it. They can't move it as much. Maybe they just don't notice when that cheek has been cut again, or maybe it makes them look like they have had a stroke - even though the scar isn't that big.
Someone tried to stab your character, but missed? Sliced the side of their chest? Not a serious wound - but it scarred...? They might not be able to lift their arm all the way up anymore. They survived the attack, but now its like their skin is has pegged taught in just the place needed to move propperly.
Even minor injuries have long-lasting effects and can be debilitating.
I sprained my ankle a few years ago. Nothing dramatic. Some days it feels strong and fine, I hardly notice it. I don't limp. But now my tendons are full of scar tissue - whenever it is cold its like the scars freeze before the rest of me and I limp real bad. When its hot they feel loose like chewed gum and I can't move it propperly. I gotta put a brace on just to balance right. When the weather changes fast, when the barometric pressure drops especially - its painful. Aches. Someones inflating balloon in there.
