Owari no Seraph : Shounen-ai?
The other day, my cousin and I hung out together and typical Otakus that we are, we found ourselves browsing anime DVDs.
As usual, since we're of different genders and taste, there's war.
He keeps forcing me to watch ecchi harem anime (which I don't really like) so I'm all like - "I'll do it if you watch Yaoi."
Of course, he then starts to demean the genre.
By chance, I saw a DVD of Owari no Seraph so I'm like - "I guess you haven't watched this huh?"
Surprise, surprise, he's all : "Are you kidding me? This is my favourite!"
"You do know that this is at least, shounen-ai?"
So we started arguing about it and as someone who's been watching anime since four - I started to list down reasons why it's as good as shounen-ai even without the official tag.
1. The Vampires : Come on. No shounen-esque vampire anime would have boots that high. Not to mention look that pretty. Have you not watched any non-shoujo, non-shounen-ai esque vamp anime? I don't know. Something like:
Hellsing? Trinity Blood? Vampire Hunter D?
2. The 'Family' Thing : Hey, I'm all about platonic bromance (I mean, I'm one of the few fujoshi who doesn't ship Johnlock or Sheriarty). Seriously. There's obviously something when two male childhood friends think more about one another instead of their female one.
Why Mika? Why Yuu? Why not Akane?
3. The Girls : How many scenes in total do you see Yuu flustered over the girls? Or the girls over Yuu? If I want to see Yuu blushing, I'd have better luck when he's with Mika. Better yet, how many times do Yuu interact with the girls one-on-one without having Mika in the conversation?
4. The Blood Drinking : Seriously, Mika could have any girl he wanted and he had to choose Yuu? Had to drink blood the first time from Yuu? Sure, argue the severity in plot, characterization and drama but!
Does he have to suck Yuu's neck? Yuu practically slashed his arm! I mean, even Fai drinks from Kurogane's hand in TRC and the two are practically canon!
5. The OP : Okay. Having two characters with equal screen time in the OP is common when they're both main characters but seriously. How can this NOT be shounen-ai?
Sure. This one is clearly edited but the unedited version? I thought a fujoshi/fudanshi did it!
Suffice to say, he started having doubts.
Really. They should just make it shounen-ai and be done with it.
What is it with guys and inability to accept shounen-ai/yaoi but gung ho about shoujo-ai/yuri. A little respect would do.
