Another background painted using custom shapes! The custom shapes provide an interesting foundation with shapes and patterns I would otherwise not be able to achieve by painting and using lasso tool. Then paint on to give it that personal touch. :) Practiced some edge control on the clouds too!
This background stuff is really testing me, but I’m slowly finding it less and less tedious and finding more joy in it. :)
One of my school buddies, Lucas, has made available a free Gumroad of a 1000 picture set of various New Zealand landscapes. These were some of my picks for these sketches but I was also sorting them out to make custom shapes out of them later and stuff. If your computer can handle ~3GB of photos I definitely recommend grabbing them!
You can see how I was sort of finding my way as the exercises progressed. For instance the first one is not very successful because of the lack of contrast in the image. So I decided to change my palette and used 4 values ranging from black to white with minimal brush strokes (the only purpose of the brush strokes was to soften edges). All shapes were drawn with the lasso tool.
Here’s another link to Lucas’ free photo pack! :)
Another thing... I’m pumping a lot of stuff out that I can’t really show because of all the wip phases it goes through, plus some personal projects. For that reason I decided to re-instate my Patreon (was on hiatus since last year). If you’d like sneak peeks for all these projects, including WIPs and sketches for the Dark Souls Tarot Project be sure to check it out! For instance I’ll be uploading the PSDs for these studies on there in just a moment. I will still be sharing stuff here as usual so no pressure at all :D
