I personally feel that the appropriate- clothing-for-fantasy-heroines fight won't be over until people begin depicting women wearing dresses as dangerous as a women wearing pants. The idea that women in dresses can't do anything is a victorian and modern one; women were archers, occasional swordfighters, did backbreaking farm work, hunted, and built buildings in dresses back in the day.
When your heroine can be depicted in both a dress, and in trousers, depending on what she's doing or where she's going, that's when I say your fantasy heroine's good to go. Because the idea that a woman has to wear depicted-masculine clothing to do anything, is a sexist idea.
It also conveniently forgets that men in medieval cultures wore 'dresses' all the time.
Pants are expensive, you know.
