Weird idea I had.
What if there were rolling abysses which sometimes arise trapping people who encounter them in a weird dream/nightmare-like realm, untill the abyss eventually dissipates releasing people in seemingly random places.
Oh and to stay unaffected by these abysses people need to be illuminated by a bright source of light, less bright light sources will not work and will get swallowed up by the abyss.
I think that a cool hangout base fortification thing for a group of characters would be a recently abandoned castle that's still in a half-decent condition.
Perhaps the reason for the castle's abandonment could be due to an intense storm that rolls through the lands around every quarter-century threatening to devastate anything structures that aren't strong enough to resist its winds.
The owners of the castle of course would have been told this, but they would ignore these warnings, having the castle built to their own specifications
For about five years the castle stood acting mostly as a retreat and holiday home for the nobles who owned it, then the storm came.
Windows were shattered, paintings flung through the air, spires were torn from their fittings and smashed into the ground or through the house.
Had they listened to the locals they would have been able to prevent this by building the castle in such a way that it could resit the elemental onslaught.
In fact, they could have rebuilt it after the storm to a far more resistant standard, but that would have required acknowledging that this was somehow the fault of the castle's owners, and well . . . the wealthy often seek to avoid taking fault for such things.
So instead they took what valuables they could salvage and left for the capital, as after all, they had more than enough wealth to withstand the loss of a castle.
Then as the relatively years go by, the roads and paths to the castle would eventually be lost to the erosive nature of time, its location being secluded meaning it would act only as a luxurious home for wild animals and the occasional lost bandit or traveler.
