«I'm a leaf in the stream of creation»
Amanda Brotzman
Me: running from my problems.
People: who are done with me running away.
And they were roommates - Brotzly (Dirk Gently)
"People say there's this guy on campus that is like...psychic," Amanda says mysteriously to me as she chews on a red vine.
"C'mon, Amanda, psychic people don't exist. It's all a big joke," I tease back at her, nicking a red vine out of the packet and smiling as she complains then settles down as we continue to walk.
"Honestly, though, Dirk Gently, people are saying he's genuine. But, like, weird. I don't know," Amanda pauses in the middle of most sentences in order to decide what she wants to say. Or maybe it's the fact that she's still chewing her candy.
"How do you even know? This is your first year. Don't ya think I would've noticed if there was a psychic in the uni?"
"Come on, Todd," she gives me a look, "You're the most oblivious person I have ever met."
"No I'm not," I defend instantly, hurt by the accusation. Oblivious? Me?
"Ya huh? What about the time when Charlie Trevor kissed your girlfriend behind the bike shed when you were in the bike shed and still talking to her?" Amanda raises a single eyebrow, placing the now-empty packet in the bin.
"That never happened, it was a rumour!" I shoot back, teeth clenched.
"Todd," she states simply, "I was there, watching."
"Slightly creepy, I'll ignore that."
"You can't deny it happened though, I saw it!" Amanda sings cheerily.
We walked for another half a minute in peaceful silence before she found her room. "Well, this is my stop," she sighs, "Wish me luck with the roomie."
"Good luck," I am sincere in wishing her - roommates around here can get pretty dodgy at times. For example, last year, I had a guy who was at least 23 and off his head with drugs half the time, never seeming to go to lectures but was still hardly ever in the room we shared. I never even found out his major, he was always too high to remember.
Although I really would quite like some luck myself as well because this year I would like to be like a normal university student and go to my lectures like a normal human. So I plod onto my room in a different part of the campus and hold my breath as I turn the key to my new room.
Immediately I am bombarded with a sight that I didn't want to see. Obviously my roommate would be the one who climbs through the window in a bright yellow leather jacket. Great first impression. He falls though, brushes his arms off and says, "Hiiiiiiiii," while smiling really weirdly.
I sigh and walk over to the bed that hasn't been used and start to unpack. I reach behind me to put one of my Mexican Funeral t-shirts away and feel someone take my hand. Recoiling and pulling it away, I turn to the guy, "What the hell?"
"I'm trying to decide whether you're a clue, an accomplice or an assistant," he says matter-of-factly, still smiling.
"Who are you? What is this?"
"Have you noticed an acceleration of strangeness in your life as of late? Perhaps a series of intense or extraordinary events that as of now seem unconnected with the exception of being each separately bizarre?" The guy inquires.
I look at him, wondering whether I've ended up with another drug addict and decide that it's going to be another long year, "...No."
He shakes his head, "Sorry, must be the other universe. Still definitely an assistant."
I shake my head this time and turn back to unpacking. He grabs my wrist again, "Wait, Todd, don't you want to know who I am?"
My mouth drops open. We aren't told the names of our roommates before we meet them and I never told this guy my name so unless he's spotted it somehow else, he's a stalker and really weird. He seems to take my mouth gaping as a yes and launches into an explanation.
"I'm Dirk Gently, and I'm a holistic detective. The term 'holistic' refers to my convictions about the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. I do not concern myself with such petty things as fingerprint powder, telltale pieces of pocket fluff and inane footprints. I see the solution to each problem as being detectable in the pattern and web of the whole. The connections between causes and effects are often more subtle and complex than we with our rough and ready understanding of the physical world might naturally suppose.”
Wait, Dirk Gently, as in the psychic guy that Amanda mentioned? Huh. She was right. He is weird. She never told me how she found out, anyway...
"Todd? Todd Brotzman? Are you okay?" Dirk Gently taps me on the shoulder repeatedly and I blink.
"Sorry, yeah," then I frowned at him, "Are you...psychic, or something."
Exasperation clouds his face and he shakes his head, "No, I'm not psychic."
"Sorry...my sister said something about a psychic guy and I just thought..."
"You have a sister?" Dirk cocks his head slightly, "Younger, right?"
I am slightly weirded out by this guy - how does he just know my full name if he isn't psychic? And why does he know-
"Amanda," I confirm, before he can make another creepy deduction and guess her name.
Dirk grins and turns back to his bed, collapsing on it and closing his eyes. After finishing my packing, I go to leave and he calls, "Todd! Where are you going?"
"To see my sister," I sigh back at him. He nods and I smile awkwardly then leave.
"Do you know her roommate yet?" An inquiring voice asks into my ear as I walk. Startled, I punch Dirk in the arm, because of course he's here.
"What the hell!" He gives me an exaggerated look, pretending to be in pain.
"Me, what the hell, no, you what the hell!" I retaliated. "I said I was going to see my sister, it wasn't an invitation you dimwit!"
"That's not a very nice compliment, Todd, but I'm here now. Anyway, you wouldn't know where to go!" Dirk beams again (seriously, the guy has to stop) and I sigh yet again.
"It wasn't meant to be a compliment, Dirk, and I've already spent two years here, I think I should know the campus by now."
"No you don't," Dirk proclaims, "Which one is Amanda's room again?"
Now that I try to think about it, I actually can't remember Amanda's room, but, "I know the way."
"No you don't," he repeats, striding ahead, "And it's Room 18."
"How the hell do you know?" I move into a slight jog to keep up with him.
"Well," he pauses, "This is an anomaly to how I normally know things. I know your sister's roommate, she's an...acquaintance of mine I suppose."
"How did you know my name?" That's the only question I really want answered, not the thoughts spinning around my head like why does he walk so fast or why does he wear a leather jacket.
"Hunch," he proposes simply, knocking on the door to Room 18 and I don't get another answer because the door swings open to reveal Amanda.
"Todd, you came!" Amanda grins and pulls me into a hug before noticing Dirk.
"Of course I came...Did you think I wouldn't come, I-"
But Amanda's attention was drawn to something other than my pathetic stuttering, "Who's this?"
"Ugh, it's, that's Dirk Gently." Her eyed light up with curiosity.
"Dir-okay, hi, sorry, I'm Amanda," she grins at Dirk and he grins back. I sigh, "No, don't."
She frowns at me, "Don't say hello?" All I wanted was to come over and see Amanda, in peace, not with my weird British roommate who is apparently psychic. Or not, according to him.
"Hello Amanda!" He says enthusiastically. I shake my head, placing a hand on my forehead. Beginning to look confused, Amanda asks, "Are you two...friends?"
"No."
"Yes."
"No."
"No."
"Yes, I mean no, you meant yes."
"We're very good friends," Dirk proclaims to Amanda, who raises an eyebrow. I decide to punch him in the arm again.
"Owwwww! You're a terrible assisfriend!"
I get led into the apartment after asking whether I could come in, and Dirk follows even after I glare at him. "What!" His excuse is, "I want to see her roommate!"
I learn that her name is Farah and she's slightly...odd. Not a surprise if she's an acquaintance of Dirk, but when I meet her she seems relatively normal.
"Farah, this is Todd, my brother, and-"
"I already know Dirk," Farah confirms, turning to face him with an exasperated expression, "Dirk, why are you still here?"
"What on earth do you mean by that, Farah?" He eyes her with that smile that has been tormenting me ever since I met him, which was hardly even an hour ago.
"You said you were going to leave, but you are still here, did something happen? Did you get shot at? Has Britain suddenly put you off?" Farah began to ramble, and Dirk rolls his eyes dramatically.
"Farah, how on earth could I have gotten into a situation where I could've been shot?"
"Because it's you, Dirk, I wouldn't actually be surprised. So many people want to shoot you....anyway, you didn't answer my question."
"Ah, yes. Well...you see. I may or may not have had a hunch that I needed to be here. And I think," Dirk peers out the window and nods, "that I was right."
Even after glancing myself, I didn't quite understand where he was coming from. Why would a police car outside require him to stay in America?
"Farah, Amanda, it's been...nice, and, errr, Todd, we have got to go," Dirk pulls my arm and I stumble out of Room 18 without getting an opinion. Amanda chuckles and shuts the door when she sees my panicked eyes, sarcastically whispering, "Good luck."
And I think I'm going to need it.
so apparently something totally wild happens next episode and drives the whole season off the rails. i'm personally betting on it being kristen starts the apocalypse but do you have any ideas?
AHHHHH I just want you to know i saw the email for this pop up while in the car and i SCREAMED. my bud. my dude. my pal. i am now convinced that is what is going to happen. that, or someone is going to die. like i said in another reply that i’m scared/convinced that Kristen (and maybe her death, sorry not to be a bummer) is the key to ringing in the apocalypse but hearing that 1. someone agrees with me and 2. the fact that something big is going to happen, is stressing me up.
i would also guess that it could have something to do with the general directive of the mission. maybe they all get kicked out of school. maybe they get arrested. maybe they all get grounded. who knows. i vote apocalypse
gilear and sklonda are still at the abernants, have any ideas on how that might be going? also i love riz and fig parent trapping their parents
I love so-so much that The Parent Trap is such a cultural touchstone that you can say “parent trapping” to someone who has never heard the phrase before and they immediately know what you mean.
I love that, in character, Fig was like, “I have a single dad. Riz has a single mom. The math just checks out.” And that was her entire thought process.
I also love that Murph immediately caved to that plan because he knows trying to argue w/ Emily is useless.
Also did you notice that Brennan rolled before he said, "Accompanied by Gilear"? Like, was Gilear being there a success or a failure?
As to what’s going on at Chez Abernant, I just went back and checked and Skolnda and Gilear actually left right after she told Adaine's dad about Riz's dad so, most likely, all that's happening is Mr. Abernant sipping tea and being aggressively willfully ignorant about the fact that Aelwyn is 100% definitely at a party making out with a pirate.
I wanna believe that Sklonda and Gilear were driving back to their respective homes or the police station, they stopped at a light, and just saw Adaine Terminator-running down the street, clearly en route to what would soon be a crime scene.
But if they were still at the Abernants’, I have to assume that Gilear would be entering his fourth long winded and completely off-topic anecdote of the night, this one about the wonders of Bastion Market (”Are you familiar with mash-ed potatoes?”/”Yes?”) fulfilling his job of keeping Mr. Abernant from being racist to Sklonda but only by making himself the much bigger, sadder target.
okay no spoilers but i desperately need to know: does ant man and the wasp take place after infinity war?
it takes place after captain america: civil war which is a long time ago but the post credit scenes takes place after infinity war :)
also about @ midnignt the fact that there was a whole segment about how shitty millenials are like im sure griffin "i would sign into law a logans run style over 30 extermination" mcelroy was fucking screaming inside. anyway i hate chris hardwick.
omfg did tHEY REALLY…
LIKE that even solidifies the sense i get that the producers and chris hardwick have no idea what they’re talking about; he didn’t know that response to dream daddy has actually been wildly positive until he heard the audience applaud, and i bet he probably never even heard of mbmbam or anything that the mcelroys do so he wouldn’t have known how much griffin hates “millennial jokes”. the whole show just comes off as not genuine and just makes me think of chris hardwick browsing the top trending on twitter and being like “ok this looks stupid i guess i can make fun of this”
hey i don't have an ao3 account so i'm telling u here but i really really love your quantum entanglement fic!!! it really takes good characterizarion for me to get drawn into fics that heavily feature characters w essentially no personality and/or screen time in canon but i ADORE your maureen and your baby!lucas. that's not even to mention lucretia (who is a hard character to nail, imo) who is also great. it's also fun to see your thoughts on the fic! anyway i can't wait for more, happy writing!
Thank you so much! Getting Maureen (and to an extent, Lucas) right was something I spent a lot of time on doing the best I could, on doing it right, because they were so so so so not right my first draft, so it’s really really exciting to see that people are enjoying and liking my take on them! (I’m probably going to talk more about developing them in the next chapter’s notes since more or less, the introductory chapters for Maureen, Lucas, and Lucretia will be finished if I cover everything I’ve got outlined.)
(I also keep giggling at your icon, it’s Monday, don’t mind me)
