Everybody, on every social media site, is going on and on about how awful 2016 was. And for once. I agree wholeheartedly with the internet. Much like others, I’m very happy to leave this year behind and hope 2017 will be full of many more wonders and happy memories waiting to be made. I guess a look back on 2016 isn’t too bad an idea though for good measures of being a good blogger.   (more…)

Happy New Year

We’re drunk. It’s 5 in the morning. Everyone left already or went to sleep. Liquor in cups as well as in us.

She’s starting to talk. She’s starting to cry. She’s starting to tell me about him.

She says that she knows him forever. Eleven years at the very least. That he always has been her kryptonite. Always a weak spot. She’s telling me that he’s not around. He lives in China and that they weren’t in touch for quite a while now, but that he texted her a while ago on Facebook, asking her for her phone number, asking her to meet him. She’s talking about doubts, worries and that she’s thinking about breaking up with her four years boyfriend.

She’s asking for advise. And I just sit there. Taking a sip. Starting to smile. Her look is asking me what’s wrong and I’m starting to laugh.

She doesn’t know that I know everything about her story. That I already lived it. That her story is mine.

It’s six in the morning. The bottle of liquor is empty by now. We’re full of it.

And so I’m starting to talk. I’m starting to laugh as disguise. I’m starting to tell her about you.

It’s 7 in the morning and I missed the bus.

Happy new year everyone!!!

So I know everyone’s said 2016 was the worst year, and they’re all glad for it to be over

but honestly

I can’t say it was all a bad year

I mean, yes, a lot of awful, horrible, sad, and down right disgusting things happened this year, I’m not gonna pretend they didn’t and that as a whole, the year could have been a lot better  (I’m still blaming the time travelers for that)

But 2016 was also the year I’ve finally been able to move forward a lot in my life

I got my own car, I started working at a job I love, I got to make tons of great memories with friends, I met a lot of cool new people, I watched other friends grow and explore new possibilities, my brother got his one year sobriety chip, I made 3 quilts in one month!

There was still so much good, and personal growth I got to experience this year, that I can’t genuinely curse the year. There was bad, yeah, a lot of it, and there is more bad that will inevitably come to follow. But there was also good, and there will be more good ahead.

So thank you 2016, it’s been a ride

And now, I can say welcome 2017, and I hope you bring many more joys to my life this year

2016

This year has been very rough for me. I’ve been broken many times and had to pick up the pieces on my own. Even the happy moments throughout the year were tainted by one thing or another. I’ve been pushed to my limit then shoved over the edge. I’ve wanted to give up on everything at one point. Just curl up in a ball and cry for days while I let everything around me fall apart. But if there is one good thing I can look back on this year on, it’s the knowledge that I didn’t give up. I pulled myself out of bed and spent every night getting my work done. I didn’t let my broken heart get in the way of what I needed to do. I broke down in the middle of the library and finished the goddamn paper through my blurry vision. I spent 3 straight days at school without ever leaving to get. my. shit. done. Did I went to drop everything? Yes. Did I want to scream and yell at the world for throwing me around like a ragdoll? Yes. But I gave life a big FUCK YOU and persevered. I’m still not 100% okay. There’s still a lot of time before I will be again. But I’ve learned and made it through. I sure as hell won’t miss you 2016. However, thank you for showing me that I have more resilience than I ever thought I did.

A Year End Benediction

May we tuck 2016 into bed, with its nightmares and disappointments, its dreams deferred and dreams fulfilled. May we count the losses and wins, big and small.  ~ May we silence the lying, lurking monsters that loom large, like shadows, in our imaginations. May we have the power to topple them, to take them captive, to declare our victory.  ~ May we remember that darkness will not have the final word, that it is dispelled with even the tiniest burst of light. May our hearts twinkle like the lights on our Christmas trees, bubbling with hope and anticipation for what’s to come, celebrating what has been.  ~ May we open fists that are clenched in anger or anxiety or dread and let go, aware of our emptiness and our inability to fill and fix ourselves.  ~ And then may we raise our open hands and return once more to a God who sustains, who is with us in our weakness and our pride and our joy, that He might fill us once more.

I started 2016 on Brooklyn Bridge in New York, and I end it sitting on the sofa in my parents’ house near London. This year has taken me from New York and Chicago, to Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, to plain old London England. I’ve passed my MA in Publishing with a distinction, and got a job in the industry I love. But perhaps most importantly, I’ve jumped into fandom head first. 

I’ve always lurked on tumblr, writing the occasional fic or post, but I’ve never done it properly. But when I saw Cursed Child for the first time back on the 21st and 22nd of June I knew I’d found something I wanted to be part of. 

Harry Potter has been a constant in my life since I learned to read, and this year has grown my enthusiasm for it like never before. In the last few months I have made amazing friends, been to the theatre and the cinema with the most brilliant people. I have written thousands upon thousands of words of fic and play reviews. I have seen incredible characters brought to life by stunning actors. It’s been the wildest and most joyful ride, and I dearly hope it continues in 2017. 

I don’t know what this year will bring, just like I didn’t know what 2016 would bring, but I’m looking forward to embracing it, and experiencing it with all the truly great people I’ve met here. I won’t name names because I know I’ll forget someone, but to all of my friends, and to everyone who’s part of our little fandom, I hope you have a happy and healthy 2017, and I can’t wait to keep fangirling with you in the new year. <3
