25/03/2023-Views at Farlington Marshes and home today (the last picture in this set, with the blossom at the entrance of Lakeside I have enjoyed seeing lately spilling out well, bare trees out the front and the pines of Lakeside still visible which aren’t when the trees get their leaves), it was interesting to be out in very windy conditions at Farlington and take in blossom well there today too.

15th January 2022: Farlington Marshes
Blue Tit and Collared Doves were key birds to see at home the morning, I took the first picture in this photoset of the latter.
We went to Farlington Marshes this afternoon, seeing my first Roe Deer of the year in a field on the way which was a happy moment and saw a great amount of birds at Farlington as detailed in my wildlife sightings summary. There were beautiful views here of the reedbeds, water with nice reflections and the important mudflat habitat which with the tide out seeing and smelling allowed you to feel really enriched by the outdoors at. I took the second, third and fifth pictures in this photoset of views here today.
When walking around we enjoyed seeing Common Gulls among Black-headed on the lake, the fourth picture in this photoset I took shows these gulls with a Teal in the background too. A Buzzard sat on a post at the back of it was a nice sight too. In the fields the regular white goose with a Barnacle Goose was lovely to see too I’ve had a great start to the year for seeing barnacles. I also felt the magnitude of being around a large amount of Brent Geese reminiscent of how I first fell in love with them on early visits here in our birdwatching days, hearing their pleasing honky calls, seeing big groups in flight and seeing one peck at another.
It was a brilliant few minutes as we went across to the cottage area firstly seeing a Fox walking across the field and into vegetation. A stunning view of a bushy tailed wonder and one of my favourite mammals. After not seeing one until December last year it feels so amazing to have seen two Foxes this year already and three at different places in the space of a couple of months, I do love them and they are one of my favourite mammals.
Then an exquisite Marsh Harrier gently sailed through the air over the reedbed. Exceptional views of this large raptor a quintessential sight of such areas, and as we stood and watched for a few minutes in aw of this spectacular natural sight I thought that it rivaled the stunning view we got of one flying over at Slimbridge last Thursday our first of the year. For a bird I added to my list of favourites a day after Slimbridge on my birthday last week we’ve had a breathtaking start to the year for them.
Last time we were here was Boxing Day when we got some memorable views of a sunset with the key features of the habitat and area lit up and against the backdrop to it. On a quite overcast afternoon here today it was one of those winter afternoons where a strip of orange sky came across an hour or so before sunset. As the sun lowered in the sky this persisted creating some very pretty scenes I took the sixth picture in this photoset showing this. Then it got more intense as we overlooked the water by the cottage which the seventh picture in this photoset shows, the orangeness licking the sides of the wide channel of water here which the eighth picture in this photoset shows. It was getting to a bit of a nice sunset with the Spinnaker tower in the distance looking nice against it also shown in the eighth photo. Then the golden hour turned up a treat as the sun found a gap in the clouds and brightly shine through. This looked spectacular, especially bringing out some rich hues in the reedbed beside us which I took the ninth picture in this photoset of. The pink/orange colour in the sky looked nice as we walked back to the car to end a fantastic afternoon out this Saturday which the tenth and final picture in this photoset shows.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: Four of my favourite birds the Marsh Harrier, Buzzard, Brent Geese and Shelduck with quite a few of the latter seen nicely, one of my favourite mammals the Fox, Teal, Gadwall, Mallard, Wigeon and plenty of Pintails a key bird of the area including some lined up nicely on a channel in the mudflats to complete a pleasing range of duck species seen today, Canada Goose, Barnacle Goose, the white goose, Mute Swans nicely together in a channel in the mudflats, Black-headed Gull, Herring Gulls well especially flying over, Common Gull, Redshank, Black-tailed Godwit, Oystercatcher and Avocet flying over nicely, Lapwing, Curlew well, Little Grebe, lots of Moorhens, Carrion Crow, Starling, a good view of a Stonechat and Greenfinch nicely at the start.
On the way home with there being a notable amount of light just still about before darkness fell as the days draw out I liked spotting among all the bare branches as I glanced into Lakeside as we drove past the distinctive cedar trees at Lakeside which I took a photo of yesterday that I was pleased with and have enjoyed a lot lately. They are near the steam railway station and it entertained me how I saw them both from looking across the University of Southampton sports fields from the main road and from our road as we came back home the other side. It was just sort of a nice thing I’ll take away from today how I saw the trees, some of the few still looking green, twice from very different points. And you can do the same with the pines in the eastern meadows at Lakeside which dominate and can be seen from far around. I have mentioned bare branches a lot and this is a nice feature they help create in winter I think.

I snuck away from the church picnic and decided to try the lake spillway for fun. It turned out to be a bad idea, but a good lesson.

All Time Greatest?
To say that I almost died would be an exaggeration, at least in my mind. It was your standard run of the mill church event; they were carrying the preachers kid up from the spillway at the lake.
Mom and Dad were at the shelter house nearby when word reached them that their son was being carried up from the spillway and appeared to be hurt. I’m guessing dad’s first thought, once again, was…
