I love dogs that can lie but I think it’s actually funnier that Ever lied specifically to steal a ball. Like not anything even valuable like a bed (happens all the time in my house) or a bone (Bella’s greatest heist). Ball is life I guess

ball IS life and this ball has been decided by everyone to be the best ball in the house. saga usually lies for access to chews and what she does is she goes and barks at the back door to be let out and then all the other dogs run out and she turns around to get the chew one left behind. *I* wasn't even playing with them at the time, so it was fully self directed Need For Ball

I’m curious, what is the grooming like for the Basset Fauves and for Maple? Do they need to be stripped like a terrier or are their coats different from wire hair? I’m delighted every time I see your dogs

They're all wirehair breeds and get stripped! Out of the fauves, Tess has the most 'normal' wirehair coat and hers is the easiest to maintain. It might take around 45-60 minutes to get through a full strip on her? Bek usually does this, so I might be misremembering the timing. Stripping aside, she doesn't need much brushing- dirt and burrs fall off her, which is nice because she loves rolling around in the dirt.

Henry on the other hand has a very fluffy, soft coat which is more work. It does strip, but it ends up being a multi day process because I like to give him and myself breaks haha. He has some fairy floss-like soft bits on his legs and underside that can catch burrs, but mostly he's decent, and only needs a lot of brushing when he's full coated and Fluffy. Maple will also get stripped, though we haven't needed to yet. She needs a lot more brushing than either fauve, though, and her coat is a magnet for all burrs that exist in the entire state. She's also most likely to have bedhead, and I find it endlessly amusing seeing what new mohawk hairstyle she's got for the moment.

Hi! Do you have any resources for tracking training? I need to get my ass in gear and actually order the scent and stuff that I want but after that I… know nothing lmao.

Ha! We are novices together. I have done far more thinking about tracking than actually training tracking. 😂 (anybody with way more knowledge than me, feel free to jump in to answer questions or provide resources)

It depends on what style of tracking you want to teach. IGP vs. AKC/CKC vs. SAR, etc. They are all a bit different, though from what I understand, generally if you train IGP style you're good for AKC but not necessarily the other way around, since IGP is more strict and stylized. And SAR tracking is even more different than sport tracking.

Realistically I'm currently aiming for AKC. I'll mostly follow Shade Whitesel's method, which is for IGP but easily adapted to AKC. She has a couple self-study classes at Fenzi Academy, as well as a webinar that might rerun at some point. Dave Kroyer has a subscription website with videos and Lars Lentz is a tracking guru mentioned a lot. I don't have any other good current resources saved right now, so maybe somebody else does. There are of course tons of free websites with tracking info, but you have to parse out how current and applicable that info still is.

As far as scent, I'm not really sure what you mean since for sport tracking usually you start the dog following your own scent (since it's most convenient) and then strangers. If you want to track animal scent for hunting, I definitely know nothing about that.

And the kiddos are keenly interested in echidnas but not obsessively so. I think that an echidnas response to being surprised is to become an immovable spiky rock is quite a turn off

My dog had a cruciate ligament repair in May last year, and last time we went into the vet (new vet we’ve never been to) for general checkups she told me that ‘most dogs do their second ligament within a year’ which seemed super weird to me. Do you think that’s right? My dog is a Jack Russell mix but maybe that’s the trend with larger dogs?

That’s correct, because while the leg was first injured, and then also while they are recovering, they are putting immense strain on that other knee and so the cruciate ligament gets damaged on the other side as well. It’s just more apparent in big dogs because they can’t as easily put more of their weight onto their front legs like a little dog can and will, and therefore the little dog will hide the injury better.

I love how all your dogs are relatively the same size and then Milo is just... there lol. Also how does the thick water/jelly stuff work?? Like did you have to work out what his water intake should be and then dose it out to him over the day, or does he have free access to it?

hahahaha my dogs are funny because they make a slide when they line up in height order. ryker, egan, pammy, ranger... milo. and the step down to milo is pretty pronounced lol

now the water thing is kinda tricky cause we’re still figuring it out. we don’t leave the jelly out for egan at all times because he’s kept with our other 4 all day, and also because she’s kept with the other 4 all day he has free access to the water bowl (😬). but he eats water-soaked kibble 4 times/day and i’ve noticed just today that since i’ve been giving him the water jelly with every meal (trying my best to ration out 6 cups of water worth of jelly over 4 meals, which is what a dog of egan’s weight needs) he hasn’t drank from the bowl once!
