i always feel a little conflicted when i get comments on my hiking pics about the dogs enjoying the view or thinking the mountains are pretty because on one hand its harmless and on the other hand its such an anthropomorphic take.

i don't think my dogs give half a shit or necessarily have the ability to process the aesthetic of their environment.

but i do think they enjoy the view in the sense that being high up there gives them an exceptional range of vision, and more importantly: the way the wind carries sound and scent for miles and miles and miles across heath- and wetland and trundra - i can't think of any better place for a dog.

Really tired of people acting like being pro or anti-conformation showing is

1) a personality trait

2) an irredeemable dichotomy with no nuance

You can be pro-conformation showing/titles and the preservation of historic and aesthetic breed traits that make you happy in addition to evaluation of physical soundness.

You can simultaneously recognize that breeding for hypertype is bad for many breeds, that some traits have become exaggerated to point of detriment, that standards may need to be modernized in the interest of emerging health information, and that using wigs or dye because you just want to win is grossly missing the point of having a dog objectively evaluated for its genetic potential as a breeding prospect.

Those opinions can coexist.

Today some dude on Facebook told me to never play tug with my dog because he's just sizing up how weak and uncoordinated I am so he can be the alpha and like

Do these people even like dogs? Don't let them play tug with you. Don't throw balls for them. Don't pet them. Don't give them treats, don't let them sleep with you, don't let them sniff things on walks, don't let them chew (no, not even bones or toys).

When they do anything that remotely resembles being a dog, slap an e-collar on them. Digging in the yard? E-collar. Dog reactive? E-collar. Stealing food? E-collar. 9-week-old puppy is mouthing you? E-collar.

This chode claimed to have been a professional trainer for 25 years and in all that time he never learned how to enjoy having a dog.

To be honest I think the idea that ‘dogs need to be “held accountable” for their actions’ has done more damage to dog training and ownership than almost anything else

Honestly any training theory that puts you as the trainer/owner as opposition to your dog is the biggest red flag ever. I cannot imagine going to work with any animal with such a combative mindset as some people online form their entire training mindset around

Idk who needs to hear this but there is no fundamental difference between indigenous hunters and white "redneck" hunters. As long as the hunting is done in a respectful and sustainable way, there's absolutely no issues with it.

Indigenous hunting isn't somehow magically more pure and respectful than non-indigenous hunting. Acting like there's a meaningful difference just plays into noble savage beliefs about indigenous peoples. If you support sustainable indigenous hunting, and all that it entails (including profiting from things like fur, jewelry, and home decor), then you need to support ALL sustainable hunting.

While others are on vacation or relaxing on the weekends you are at a club, traveling to training and seminars, out in the field, evaluating progress and making plans to do it all over again next week. There’s a huge financial commitment as well. Some also devote a lot of time to their local, regional, and national clubs to make sure there’s an infrastructure for everyone to participate. Most of us do this because we are competitive and are passionate about dogs and training.

Some recent posts and conversations made me reflect – guess what – you don’t have to be a world team competitor to be worthy in the sport world. You don’t have to devote every waking hour to training. You can take a break or do what you can with the resources you have and have appropriate aspirations. You can devote time to your growing family, your elderly parents, your financial situation, your education or career, your other personal obligations, your relationships. You can have a balanced life while still enjoying your dogs and not getting burned out on constant obligations. You can devote the resources you have to a goal of learning how to train and enjoy your dog, attaining your first title with passing score at your club trial, helping others when you can, and maybe someday being competitive when your stars align.

If you are in a position where your dreams are on hold, your circumstances don’t permit you to do as much as you’d like with dogsports, and you are doing your best with what you have, it’s ok. Don’t be hard on yourself. More importantly, don’t let anyone else try to take away your self-worth by judging you on your circumstances. Life is dogsports, but there’s also life without it. It’s a lesson I had to learn multiple times.”
