Something Star Trek does that’s shockingly rare in sci-fi is emphasize how big a deal FTL travel is in the designs of the spaceships.
Like, they aren’t 100% consistent with it, but generally speaking a warp drive isn’t a little box buried somewhere in an otherwise-sublight spaceship that doesn’t alter its physical appearance.
Even in late eras, most starships are built around their warp drive, it’s the most prominent feature they have.
myo!
probably the silliest part of FTL is situations like these, where the obvious optimal play is to sit here for 20 minutes ranking up all your crew members to max shields and engines and piloting.
I generally quite like the crew exp system - it's simple, but it gives meaning to each crew member and gives you reason to care about them. However, it has the unfortunate side effect of producing these situations, where the optimal strategy is to stop playing the game and go grab a latte.
Like hot take!! eighteen was right, we should do the problem solving faster!! I h8 when numbers add everything individually instead of using multiplication!!! we're not as patient as you!! I'm targeting 16 btw >:/
So inspiring how post-modern pirates replaced "surrender or die" with "engage in dialogue about your surrender preferences." Nothing says "terror of the spaceways" like a feedback form.
And be sure their victims appreciate the philosophical nuance while being robbed.
PS I’m not paid or sponsored by any company. I’m just an unemployed immigrant without money doing scifi better than big companies.
Brian Haberlin, wonderfully far out astronaut cover and promo art for his comic series project "Faster Than Light"
Hornet is in some shitty places until silksong comes out day 33
