Something Star Trek does that’s shockingly rare in sci-fi is emphasize how big a deal FTL travel is in the designs of the spaceships.

Like, they aren’t 100% consistent with it, but generally speaking a warp drive isn’t a little box buried somewhere in an otherwise-sublight spaceship that doesn’t alter its physical appearance.

Even in late eras, most starships are built around their warp drive, it’s the most prominent feature they have.

What frustrates me about Sci-Fi is lightspeed/FTL travel. According to the theory of relativity: from your perspective, no matter how far you travel it will always be instant. So if you travel at the speed of light (or faster) that’s a massive safety hazard because you’d either overshoot your destination or crash into something and not even know it.

Imagine crashing into a star but you were travelling so fast you didn’t even know you were headed toward a star and your brain can’t even process you and your ship being completely fried.

Blazer - Prologue 1

After a period of darkness where colonized planets live in isolation, light-years of travel separating them, a faster than light space ship

I made a webcomic!

The comic is about the last faster than light space ship, the Blazer, and this prologue introduces one of our protagonists Tristan Stewart. Here he's captaining a vessel that is being infiltrated by space pirates.

For interstellar travel, spacecraft fly through hyperspace portals — you know, into hyperspace — and some time later they exit through the hyperspace portal on their destination. For several stories, we never get any details on what hyperspace is like; because nothing story-relevant happens in hyperspace. It's just a means for getting to places.

When we eventually learn what hyperspace is like, it turns out that “hyperspace” is just some place in space where we collected one mouth of each of the primordial wormholes we've found, while shipping the other mouths off to all the star systems of interest.

And in “hyperspace” is where they perform border checks. The story that finally gives us more insights isn't an exciting hyperspace rescue mission like in Babylon 5, but a bureaucratic madness tale.
