For all the arguments about “science fiction vs science fantasy,” when you get down to brass tacks Star Trek is only like 3% more realistic than Star Wars.

And most of that 3% is the result of Andrew Probert being a real stickler that all the detailing on his ship designs needed to have a consistent function like reaction control thrusters or transporter emitters instead of just being greebles for visual interest’s sake; and that set the standard for all the TNG-era shows.

Something Star Trek does that’s shockingly rare in sci-fi is emphasize how big a deal FTL travel is in the designs of the spaceships.

Like, they aren’t 100% consistent with it, but generally speaking a warp drive isn’t a little box buried somewhere in an otherwise-sublight spaceship that doesn’t alter its physical appearance.

Even in late eras, most starships are built around their warp drive, it’s the most prominent feature they have.

Two things I think people should know:

Greebles make things look neat

You can use pretty much anything as a greeble

trying to design Claesian spacecraft is so hard. I want all the ships to look sleek and streamlined, but also have actual variation in their designs for different purposes. So far, I have a starfighter loosely based off a boomerang and bird combo that can fly forward or backward, a stealth ship based on a bird/real life stealth bomber, a scout ship based on a dragonfly, and a diplomatic ship that kinda looks like a whale and/or the big red ship from Lilo and Stitch. The resemblance to another fictional ship was entirely unintentional, and I personally don’t think this ship looks “fancy” enough, but this is also just a teeny concept sketch, and the actual thing is supposed to be BIG like a cruise ship, so…

I don't think I ever posted this. This is my design for a Star Wars ship. It's called the Crescent Dragon, and it's captained by my OC Seelai Nexus. I've posted about her before.

I'd really like to teach myself some kind of 3D-modeling software to make this into a model. Alternatively, I've been thinking about trying to kitbash it out of model plane parts...
