Would fat girl related tips and tricks or advice be something people would be interested in? I would love to open up communication!
My mother is extremely fat-phobic and has been criticizing my weight for years. We have a relatively good relationship most of the time but her issues with my weight have always been a problem. How do you think would be the right way to talk to her about this?
I'm a fan of the "boundaries" technique with this one. I had to do this with my dad regarding politics. Unfortunately, it's a confrontational technique, though there are various ways to soften it. Here are a couple of examples of how it could go:1) Sit mom down, maybe over coffee. "Mom, I appreciate that you're concerned for me, and I like to talk with you about a lot of things. But we are never going to talk about my weight again. We can talk about anything else. But my weight is no longer up for discussion."2) Take a walk together in the neighborhood, or in some other neutral place. "Mom, I think we know each other pretty well, and I really value our conversations. However, I don't think we agree on weight issues, and I don't want to talk about weight with you anymore. We can talk about anything else, but my weight is no longer up for discussion."It's important to be very very clear about creating the boundary. Don't ask them if you can create the boundary. Don't make it vague or sound like an opinion, like "I think we probably should not talk about weight." Otherwise it's giving them an 'in.' Most parents who bring up weight over and over again are inured to subtler cues: they're obviously ignoring the fact that you've been uncomfortable talking about this for years. So you need to be direct. Clear. Unmistakable. Good luck! If anyone has any other suggestions, please post them in an ask.
