Getting rid of the ‘obesity’ CONSTRUCT
Construct, n,
An idea or theory containing various conceptual elements, typically one considered to be subjective and not based on empirical evidence: history is largely an ideological construct
I’ve said from the start, the ‘obesity’ construct has to go. Many, even among fat acceptance don’t seem to get this. People talk about ‘reclaiming’ it which beggars belief. You cannot reclaim what was never yours. ‘Obesity’ did not and could not have come from fat people. It comes totally from those who are not fat. Defining fat people in terms of an outsiders hostile view, removing fat people from personhood.
It has no other reason to exist but that.
One way of thinking about it is ‘obesity’ enables people to hide their perpetuation of attacking (fat) PEOPLE behind the notion that ‘disease’ is being attacked i.e. those who say “Obesity is a disease like cancer.”
Nope, ‘obese’ and/or ‘obesity’ are a replacement for person or people.
If a person is on fire and someone rugby tackles them, rolling them around on the ground. They are saving them.
If someone pretends a person is on fire in order to do exactly the same, they’re doing the opposite. Pretending people are ‘disease’ enables fat phobes to pretend their abusive stance towards fat people is something other than it is.
“Child/hood obesity” is a way of training children to accept this kind of abusive treatment as for their own good. Rather like other forms of adults “grooming” children.
This isn't so much to hide abusiveness from fat people, it's to hide it from the fat phobes themselves. They know they are in the wrong. Look how kindly they treat themselves in comparison.
Getting rid of the construct and its term 'obesity' is a way of forcing people to face what they are actually saying to real people and their real bodies.
