For the Fanfiction Writing Asks:
2. Where do you get your fic ideas?
4. How do you choose which fics to write?
18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
77. Why do you enjoy writing fanfiction?
👍👍
Oh, I feel like you picked all the questions that are the most difficult for me to answer! 😅🤣
2. Where do you get your fic ideas?
Oh man, there is no one answer to this; they can literally come from anywhere. Sometimes they come from conversations I have with my friends and my girlfriend about the fandom (shoutout @agreatcheesecakestudentstuff @katethisisnotcutlery and @nogenderblender9358 😘), sometimes they come from a song I've listened to that I've decided to make about my characters, sometimes they're based on a single scene, conversation, or even just a line of dialogue that comes to my head, sometimes they're inspired by something that happens in my real life, sometimes they're inspired by something I learn about the actors who play the characters or something else they've been in, or sometimes they're inspired by some other movie or show that I've watched. But for the most part, I feel like the ideas just pop into my head with no explanation 😂 I could maybe answer this question more accurately for a specific fic, but even then, I feel like the origins of my ideas fade away into the ether once I start writing them.
4. How do you choose which fics to write?
Probably the biggest factor is how much of the idea I actually have. I get so many ideas for fics, but a lot of them start out as little more than vague concepts or single scenes. So I usually wait until I have approximately 50% of the story outlined before I commit to actually writing it. If I have a clear beginning, middle, and end in mind, then it's a go.
18. Do you enjoy research? Which fic of yours required the most research?
I'd say I do enjoy research when I decide to do it, but whether I decide to is a complete toss-up. Sometimes, I'll spend hours learning everything I can about something that's mentioned in one paragraph, and sometimes I'll decide that it's okay to just guess how some main mechanic of the plot works. For example, my fic Fireflies was entirely set in Central Park, a place I've never been. But I didn't do any research on it at all 😅 I decided that the little knowledge I have of it from movies, TV, and other fics was enough to figure things out. On the other hand, A Real American Christmas has one scene set in the real restaurant Denny's Beer Barrel Pub, which I have also never been to. But for some reason, I decided that I needed to do as much research on this restaurant as I could, so I read over the entire menu, watched every video I could find of people eating their giant challenge burgers, and studied every available photo I could find of the place online. The shirt that Yelena gets in my fic? That's a real shirt that they give to people who can't eat the entire burger. I even went so far as to eat a normal-sized burger as fast as I could so I could accurately describe the experience in the scene. I could not tell you what possessed me to research this scene so thoroughly, but it was fun 😂 But I will say, the one thing I always research when I include it in my fics is dialogue spoken in other languages. I can only speak English, but I never want that to be a reason my characters can't speak other languages or for it to be an excuse to translate things incorrectly. I use a combination of Google Translate and the different articles I find when I search for whatever kinds of phrases I'm trying to say, so I do have to have faith that those sources are accurate. But I always make sure the translations are the same across all the sources I'm looking at before I write anything down. I do my best to make sure my translations are accurate, and I'm always open to learning and correcting my mistakes whenever anyone makes me aware of them. I also always do a lot of research on the fandoms themselves, so my canon details are usually pretty accurate lmao. And as for which fic requires the most research, I'm going to make a prediction that it's going to be my Legends of Tomorrow fic, When Fate Is Gone, What's Left? Because I'm going to be at least mentioning a few different Legends missions, which means I'm going to have to do research on whatever times and places I have them go to. That research is definitely going to be fun for me, so stay tuned for that!
77. Why do you enjoy writing fanfiction?
Oof, the million-dollar question. I feel like there are lots of ways I could answer this, but I'll stick with the two main reasons that first came to my mind. First, I write fanfiction because being a writer is a very important part of who I am. I may not actually be writing constantly, but I am constantly thinking about it. To quote Gwyn Davies, it is my divine purpose, and it's something that never fails to make me feel truly alive. Fanfiction is just one of the types of writing that I do, but it feels no less important. And Secondly, it's because there are stories that I want to see played out with my favorite characters that I know I'll never see in canon. Whether it's because it's an AU, or a crossover, or just a story that focuses more on the characters than it does the plot, all of my fics explore something that canon never can. Writing fanfiction really does feel like playing with dolls sometimes, and nothing is more fun than that 🥰
This shield is so feeble, it's like it's not there at all!
(Man, Fatebreaker's design is complicated but also pretty fun to draw, I suppose I could have simplified but.......... I got lost in the sauce, idk lol. Also, this post is brought to you by me starting on FRU!)
