Okay so I'm translating one of my favourite books from German to English and I don't even know it that's legal, haha. But I wanted to share the first few paragraphs with you even though none of you will probably read it. Constructive criticism is highly appreciated, as well as opinions about it.
The Hunter and the Hunted
At first glance, they looked alarmingly human. As far as Jade could tell from her place in the shadows of the mural, it were only two characters. They stood in the middle of the old city hall square, looking upwards at the jagged edges of the ruins that soared into the gyratory, cloudy sky. Both were cloaked and grimy water dripped from their hems. Even their heads were veiled – one with a shabby rag, the other with something that could be a part of a finely woven fishnet. In the pallid light of the early summer morning, their faces laid in the shadows so it looked like creatures without faces stood on the town hall square – apparitions of former residents, waiting in front of their destroyed housings, where the hollow eyes of the windows, as empty as their invisible faces, merciless carelessly staring back.
Jade pressed her backpack to her chest and pushed back towards the wall. Even though the morning was so cool she could see her breath, she felt like she was getting feverish. She took a deep breath to not let the dread overwhelm her. She knew she should get away from this place as fast as possible, but she stood still, unable to tear her gaze away. Fascinated against her will, she followed the sleek motions that gave the figures the elegance of dancers. They were given away by the way they looked around and glided a few steps further, how they absorbed and reflected the degree of the surrounding destruction in their gestures and posture. Something flowing lay within, too swift and fleeting to be human. In front of the former city hall, of which only the bullet-riddled front was still standing, they came to a halt again and looked up.
“Come on, let’s scram!” Lilinn’s vigorous hand grasped her shoulder.
“That… those are Echoes!” Jade whispered breathlessly.
“I know. They mustn’t spot us.”
Jade gulped. Of course not. She remembered well enough the battered body of a man that Martyn and the other riverfolks had been salvaging out of the basin some weeks ago. And people on the black market told that a few days prior, two wardens of the Lady were found dead – in front of the grating of the Golden Gate, with wounded necks and an expression of horror on their faces.
Slowly, Jade retreated, one groping step after another, crouched and so cautiously that not even the crumbled marble scrunched under her feet. Four steps, three, left before she reached the end of the wall. Still she was holding her empty backpack before her chest like a shield. It raised her hackles to think about the possibility that dead eyes already spotted her in the shadows, following her every movement. At least they were said to have dead eyes. The stories that were whispered to kids that disobeyed told of beastly visages, canines and a tongue that was as long and sharp as a dagger and death-bringing. Others insisted that the Echoes had mummy faces and that only their eyes, clear and green as the Wila, were alive and paralyzed everyone that stared too deep into them.
Despite being hardly able to breathe out of fear and tension, Jade couldn’t help it: Shortly before she scurried around the corner after Lilinn, she cast a quick glance back.
The Echoes were gone. Only the water that had dripped from their wet, tattered cloaks still glistened on the stone floor.
