How many wine rules can you break in one evening? First, I decided to open a rose on one of the coldest days of the year. Second, the wine was served with smoked lamb shank, not a recommended pairing anywhere I can see. Third, even though it was a fancy weekend meal I poured I wine that I purchased for $3.99. The result - a smash hit! This 2017 Tempranillo Rose from Faustino in Rioja was just terrific. The wine was too cold when I opened it so I let it warm up a bit. After a few minutes the aromas emerged - strawberry, jolly rancher candy, cherry, flowers. On the palate, an impressive mouthfeel and texture and very bold red fruit balanced by very zippy acid and a long finish. This wine is normally $9-10 and would be great at that price. At $3.99 at Grocery Outlet - it’s just stupid.
