A Boy I Once Knew
There was something about that boy. He had the gentlest personality when it came to those who were being mistreated or those who were younger than himself, yet he also had a dark side. His temper was easily aroused, and he had difficulty keeping his anger under control. Sometimes he could be talked down and get himself back under control, but sometimes he had the need to punch things; never did he punch a person, but a lot of walls felt his rage. Within moments it would be over, as if it had never happened. There is nothing more remarkable than that boy's smile, if only he showed it more. He could make me smile; there's no doubt about that. His cleverness and quick wit always made him a great companion for joking around with. He was smart too, definitely in that wisdom beyond-your-years way. He had very profound moments and was very dedicated to his learning. Sometimes. His smile when he did well on an assignment, or when he finally understood something he thought he was too dumb to understand, was always very contagious. I always called him my little genius. He liked that name and would sometimes refer to himself as a genius. And I would give him my very serious reply, “I don't doubt it.” He needed the encouragement; there was never a boy who looked more sad than this one. I remember when I first met him how he would talk about his life not being very good. He stopped talking like that, but the sadness remained in his features. I found myself asking him over and over how he was doing and if he was okay. I know now that most of his sadness came from his lack of faith in himself. He was constantly going on about how dumb he was and how he couldn't do well in school. I have always believed in him. And I was never afraid of letting him know that. There are very few people in this world that convince you within moments of getting to know them that they can improve this world, truly make a difference. If you were to ever meet this boy, you would know he is one of these few people to watch out for in the future. I'm so thoroughly convinced in his potential for greatness; I only wish he could see it. I hope he learns to soften his edges and learn that his temper is preventing him from his fulfilling his destiny. I'm worried for him in the future. Especially if he can't control the beast inside him that fights to get out and punch the nearest object. I hope others may recognize and notice this extraordinary boy too. There is not doubt in my mind that I will always remember him. I'm truly blessed for being able to know him, even if it was only for a brief period of time.
