DESPITE vs IN SPITE OF
Despite and in spite of are prepositional expressions. They have a similar meaning to although or even though and express a contrast between two things. They are both more common in writing than in speaking. Despite is a little more formal than in spite of.
NOTE: Despite and In Spite of may come up in the open cloze part (use of English part 2) and in the key word transformation part (use of English part 4) of the B2 First and C1 Advanced exams
The entire building was practically falling apart underneath your feet. Rubble everywhere forcing you to slow your movements so as not to trip, The area was soaked with the scents of the invading heroes and the scents only grew stronger the farther into the center of the building you go. One scent in particular had your omega clawing at your insides begging you to turn around, to run, to never look back. Still you forced your feet forward one after the other, following the dark haired alpha in front of you.
You sniffed the air once more to comfort yourself in knowing that your own scent was completely masked. It seemed that all that training was in fact worth it. You just hoped that the defense techniques you learned were also.
The two of you slunk through the door leading into the bar, pausing in your tracks. The entire outer wall of the bar had been knocked out, rubble and dust everywhere, the stench of a recent fire hanging thick. Through the giant chasm in the wall, you could see straight out onto the parking lot, could see the three heroes fighting against your packmates.
The erasure hero, who you recognized as Shoto’s teacher, had his binding cloth tightly around Kurogiri’s neck armor, hair waving in the wind. Battling the mist villain and trying to knock him out. You recognized that was probably why Kurogiri hadn’t warped anyone out yet, Aizawa was canceling his quirk.
Your eyes quickly shifted over to the dragon hero who Spinner was facing off to, with what looked like a piece of chunk of concrete with rebar sticking out several places, a particularly long piece coming out the end perfect for a handle. He was swinging his makeshift weapon and fighting off the bigger reptile decently, his mobility much higher than the she-dragon’s with her clunky size.
You were frozen in place, eyes transfixed on the scene in front of you as Endeavor came into view, your omega feeling like it was going to force itself out of your throat and hightail it out of there by itself if you wouldn’t listen. Still your feet wouldn’t move, not even as you watched a blast of fire leave his palms focused onto a single target, a menacing smile crossing his features.
You were so caught up in watching the flames light up the pro-heros features that you didn’t hear Dabi’s shout of warning, barely recognizing when he pushed you down out of the way of an ice blast, the ice forming a rough cage like structure around him.
Your eyes widened as you took in the form running towards you, half red half white hair falling across focused eyes as he glared at Dabi, a shout in your direction.
“Y/n-“
“Run, get out of here!” Dabi yelled over him, his fingers already engulfed in blue flames, melting the ice around him with ease, only to narrowly dodge an ice spike that was sent in his direction.
You didn’t even look back, forcing yourself onto your feet and throwing yourself into the concrete maze that was the outskirts of the parking lot. You put as much distance between yourself and the two alpha males, your mind running a mile a minute as you tried to come up with a plan. If you could only get Kurogiri free for just a minute from the Erasure hero’s quirk, then he could get everyone warped out of here and to safety. But how were you supposed to do that?
You remembered Shoto telling you stories about how scary the attack on the USJ was during their training, remembered how he recounted just how intense his teachers focus was, how he had kept his quirk going for minutes, even while being brutally pounded into the ground by the Nomu. You remembered the sick terrified feeling as he told you about his teachers injuries and how worried he was for the pro-hero.
You specifically remember how he told you about how the pro’s quirk didn’t last as long as it used to. How his injuries were so bad and he was still on the recovery for them and that the teen wasn’t sure the hero could keep it up for more than a few minutes at a time.
The hero had to take breaks. He couldn’t keep Kurogiri forever. Especially not if there was a larger threat.
You snuck your head out, your eyes flittering around the battlefield taking in the scene in front of you, latching onto the teacher in question, his hold on Kurogiri secure, before what you were looking for came into view.
Shigaraki was too fast. When you first met him you thought it was just because of Kurogiri’s quirk that he was able to get from point A to point B in the blink of an eye. Afterall, you had only heard stories of the attack on the USJ. You hadn’t been there. Hadn’t seen the way that he crossed 40 ft in just a second with all intent to kill a student, only for Aizawa to stop him. But after being around him and seeing just how quick his reaction time was, you weren’t terribly surprised by the fact that he had Endeavor giving it his all just to keep up with his movements and dodge his attacks.
Endeavor might have been significantly stronger. Might have had a quirk that was better suited for long ranged combat, might have even been able to fly with his new moves he was working on.
But all Shigaraki had to do was touch him, and Shigaraki hands down had the old alpha out maneuvered.
You knew that if it came down to loosing Endeavor’s life, or losing the hold he had on Kurogiri, Aizawa would choose to save the hero’s life to fight another day.
If you could just distract Endeavor for just a second… if you could give Shigaraki that chance, Kurogiri could get away and warp everyone to freedom.
You just needed to get close enough.
Pushing off of the rubble pile you forced yourself into action, you were going to have to go around practically the entire parking lot to get to where you needed to be for what you needed to do. You forced yourself to focus, keeping your scent reigned in and your steps quiet and calm. You couldn’t draw attention to yourself, not until it was time. You didn’t want one of the heroes trying to get in your way.
Pushing yourself from rockpile to concrete slab to the next pile of scattered debris you forced yourself on. Refusing to allow yourself to check in on your packmates, forcing yourself to keep going even as the revolting scent of fire and smoke burned your nose. You completely tuned out your omega and the sounds of the battle around you, focusing on the task at hand until you were at the very last stretch, only a couple more yards until you were close enough, your eyes focused on the concrete rubble in front of you.
Lunging forward you didn’t even notice the hidden scent until it was too late.
You came screeching to a halt, eyes wide with panic as you stared at the omega in front of you. She was younger than you, looked like she was either in her last year of high school or freshly out. Periwinkle hair down except for the two strands that were expertly styled into two bunny-ear like twists on top of her head, big blue doe like eyes staring back at you as she hovered in the air for the briefest of seconds balanced on yellow spirals of energy before she dropped to the ground her hands out in front of her, a look of confusion yet determination on her round face.
“Why are you running? We are here to help you.” She took a step towards you and you backed up, trying to think of what you could use as a weapon, a way to escape, anything, when the recognition of her scent hit you like a brick wall, making you freeze.
“You’re his omega… his omega is a hero,” your voice was shaky as you looked at the omega opposite you, her eyes growing wide as saucers at your words, her own features distorting in panic. She moved faster than you did, no doubt due to her hero training, her hand slapping across your mouth as she dragged you behind a large pile of bricks her eyes flickering around the space as she spoke in a hushed whisper.
“Shut up, they will hear you. Do you know what they would do to me if they found out? Do you know what they would do if they thought they would get him?”
You yanked her hand away from you, seeing your chance. She was terrified. Barely keeping ahold of her scent. Hiding in a society of heroes while she was bonded to one of the most notorious villains in Japan, just waiting for her secret to be found out.
“Then come with us. Help us get out of here and come with us. Shigara-“
“Don’t say that name” She hissed in your face, anger crossing her features as she shoved you against the discarded piece of wall, with force that you wouldn’t expect from an omega. You briefly wished you had that kind of strength.
“I won’t be his spy anymore. I won’t play his games. I don’t need his lies and false affection-“
She was seething at this point, hurt clear in her face as she gripped your hands. If you didn’t get away from her right now she was going to drag you in. She was a hero. She would do her job and you knew it. But she was still an omega just like you. Still had strong feelings just like you, and judging by the way Shigaraki acted when it came to her, you had a feeling the bond wasn’t forced, that there had been something there at one time. That could still be there.
“He loves you!” Your words barely came out a whimper, the sounds of the fighting in the background getting louder in your ears. It sounded like the heroes might have the upper hand again. But she no doubt heard you. The look of surprise that crossed her face was what you needed, slamming your head against hers with a crunch, ignoring the throbbing in your head as you pushed her off of you with all of the strength that you had. She stumbled back, her fingers clutching her nose as she groaned, tears springing into her eyes as she tried to reorient herself, her hands up in defense ready to use her quirk. You were quicker than her though, already springing several steps away, grabbing a piece of concrete off the floor, scrambling up a pile of bricks, only to look down at the omega on the floor, her heated glare piercing your heart.
“Tell him not to bother with his lies anymore, tell him I’ll drag him to Tartarus myself if I have to. He will not control me. He is not my alpha.”
Even though her words were harsh, you could hear the pain behind them, the hurt, the betrayal that she felt. You knew you should run, get away and finish your plan before she had the strength to capture you again, knowing you wouldn’t get away a second time, but something in her eyes made you stop, glancing around quickly before fixing her with look that held no room for doubt.
“I don’t know what happened between you, but he loves you. He’s an absolute asshole from what I know about him, but he would turn this whole world to ash if it meant that you were safe.”
“He’s already trying to do that.” She hissed back.
You were just about to say something in response when you heard the laugh of the the flame hero too close for comfort, the omega below you shooting you down with her quirk as soon as you turned your back to look. [MF1] Tumbling off of the brick pile, a sharp pain of your head meeting the ground, you groaned in dismay as she jumped ontop of you, pinning you down, her eyes latching onto the piece of rock that had slipped out of your hand.
“What even was your plan? You really think you can beat the pro-heros?”
You coughed, as she pressed you further against the ground, holding you in place regardless of your struggles to get away. A funny feeling was running through your entire body and you could already tell your time was running out.
“Why are you even with these villains anyways, they are murderers for damn sake!” The look on her face was a mixture of anger and genuine confusion, as well as desperation. Like she needed you to explain your logic. She needed you to give her a reason.
“Because-“ you winced as your brain grew foggy and everything swirled in front of you, black dots invading your vision. “I would do anything to be with my alpha.”
You could hear her gasp, her grip on you releasing as your world faded to black, a smile on your face as you whispered your next words leaving her behind.
“Because I love him.”

Nejire watched as the omega in front of her melted into a puddle, recognition of Twice’s quirk flashing in her eyes. A decoy.
Her mind was racing a mile per minute as she looked at the spot where the omega had previously been, the puddle fanning out until it reached the concrete piece that they had been holding. She stared at that piece for another minute before peaking her head back and looking at the battlefield in front of her, her mind calculating as she watched, a sick feeling tugging at her stomach.
Endeavor had backed Shigaraki against the building next door, fire trapping the lanky alpha in one spot, his fingers scratching his neck as the older alpha boasted to the villain with a smile. Taunting him. Aizawa had Kurogiri all but tied down, his eyes never leaving the mist villain as he continuously canceled his quirk. Blinking for mere milliseconds at a time, never enough for the villain to activate their quirk.
Almost immediately Nejire guessed the omega’s plan from her standpoint, eyes sliding down to the concrete piece again, guilt gnawing at her stomach as she fought with herself. She never wanted to come on this mission. Knowing what she would be walking into as soon as she got the call minutes after the alpha had snuck out of her window. Part of her wanted to chase after him, to warn him and tell him to get out. The other part was so mad at him that she wanted to finally capture him and put him behind bars, to end this.
Instead of either, she had been cowardly, hiding away immediately once the battle started, hiding her scent and blocking his out from her mind as she desperately tried to skirt around the battle and stay out of his sight.
She couldn’t fight him, but she also couldn’t save him. Not without ruining her own life first.
Her eyes wandered back to the puddle that was all but gone, the omega’s words looping on repeat in her head.

Shoto looked on as the Dabi decoy melted into a puddle with a sigh, his eyes flickering over to the faintest sound of rubble shifting as he noticed the rabbit hero emerge from a hole in the building, limping, but alive, her eyes trailing two figures sneaking away into the distance. With one last glance back to the battle to confirm all was alright, his eyes focusing on his fathers figure who had the leagues leader trapped against a building on the far side, Shoto took off after Miriko, his sights focused on the omega running away from him.
