SHINE (2025, THAILAND - ORCHESTRIC VERSION)
Episode 2
Naran (YOTSAWAT TAWAPEE aka EURO) and Krailert (YUKE SONGPAISAN aka SON) meet up.
At first glance Naran seems scared and intimidated by Krailert but....
It’s been pointed out that this looks like the scene where Claudia gets turned. I’m not OK.
Guess who's inexplicably sad again!!!!
Still perturbed that all the most recent homeschooled characters on AIO are jerks. >:(
[except for Kristen (ep.930) but she as explained previously is only an implied homeschooler]
Anyway, here's the run down. In episode (I can't find it right now but if anyone remembers or I find it I will add it) it is revealed that Vance King has been taken out of school to be homeschooled by his mother. She said something about avoiding bad influences I believe in response to him being in trouble with detective Polhause for the whole Perilous Pen situation. I don't remember all the details but I do remember freaking out when it first aired because the first mention of a homeschooled character in the town of Odyssey since the Shepherd is Vance King. Vance King!
Then we get Zane in one of the more recent episodes. (ep.979) He's revealed to be online schooled, which yes, I do count because there is enough overlap and it's very different from online public schooling over zoom. (yes, this is a grey area and if you don't want to count Zane I understand) Point being this kid which is getting alternative education is doing so because he was suspended from school for putting PeanutButter in and then cutting another student's hair.
In both of these cases the kids were public schooled then pulled for behavioral issues. It inadvertently implies that the main reason kids wind up being homeschooled in Odyssey is that they can't crack it in public school.
Also of note is the annoying podschooled or whatever joke in Drake and the Heart Drive, which could have been funny but in context it made me too aware of the hand of the author and reminded me that the writer do in fact know who their audience is but are refusing to give them representation.
Representation they have proven they can provide (the shepherds) but haven't done so for like 20 years, even as this portion of their audience has probably increased.
Oh and to top it off I'll note again they do specifically market to homeschool family on occasion. See my previous reposted ad for their American History CD collection.
Also as long as I'm ranting, they had the PERFECT opportunity to introduce a homeschool family incredibly recently and they blew it. And that family is of course the Perkins. Maybe it's my close proximity to a military base but I know a lot of homeschooled military brats and the Perkins would fit right it. I mean just look at Wyatt. Bridget too honestly although she's less obvious. One of the major ones is honestly her job, like it might just be me imaging things but something about some of the scenes she's in while on the job are like, yes this is 2pm on a Thursday. Her other coworker has now been confirmed as a college student, it just works.
"But how would they meet the other kids" I hear an uncreative voice from the back say.
Whit's End, the park, school sports/extra cariculars (homeschoolers can sometimes join those), random town events, how they met them in canon, honestly I don't think they met most of their friends in school.
Honestly I would love a full retcon where they just say they were homeschooled this whole time and pretend like that's always been the case (I don't actually advocate for this because more people would probably hate the continuity errors more than happy for the change but it's the principle)
Becuase it literally wouldn't change that much! I can't even think off the top of my head scene that would disprove they are homeschooled. Or at least one that couldn't be minorly tweaked to fit. Also non-religious reasons for homeschool rep built right in!
Anyway I headcanon the Perkins as a homeschool family and the point of me saying how easy it would be to change them to fit is basically to say if they wanted to write a homeschool family it wouldn't be that hard.
I'm feeling emotional over neanderthals again.
