As the curtain rose, the dancers did some type of warm-up routine in preparation to dance. They did this for some time. As the dance progressed, I expected to find some type of backstory, or a logical and chronological flow of dance steps in relation to each other. This was not exactly the case, as I realized that these dances were heavily based in ballet in reference to contemporary dance. I soon realized that it was meant for the audience to infer on what they thought was happening to make an interpretation and also to challenge their analytical skills. After deciding this, my interest grew as the performance continued. The type of dancing done was contemporary with many classical facets. I feel as if the February dance captured the classical techniques of dances and related them to the contemporary through many different step variations. I specifically enjoyed the spontaneity of the dances, and the unpredictability of each dance.

The introduction of the performance was very odd, yet very ingenious in capturing and holding the attention of the audience. It showed the backstage dancers getting ready to make and appearance, while the others were running across the stage. The introduction of the performance by this segment added some type of mystery to the performance, and was the attention getter as, in a paper or essay, and held my attention. The placing of the dancers seemed very well coordinated, as well as the costumes expressing the movement of the body through more fitting clothing. There was no ballet, but mainly walking and jumping, which seemed to highlight the body in everyday movement, mimic these movements while the costumes allowed the audience to see every detail of the body’s actions.
This segment featured all female dancers and added some type of exclusivity to the performance. All the dancers were dressed alike yet different. Different lights were used to highlight the movement of the feminine style, and showed how light can be used to accentuate the movements of the human body in special reference to the human eye. By contrasting the bright colored costumes with low lighting and small light patterns, it confused the eye, and while the eye was adjusting to the dimness of the setting, light patterns highlighted sections of movement to focus on by the eye and making the dance look flawless and graceful. In combination with this was the choreography, which seemed to be deeply rooted in ballet. The spins, turns, jumps, and runs showed heavy ballet styling, which was combined with the costumes to further perpetuate this theme. Some of the costumes fluttered when certain types of dances were done, and further gave the appearance of gracefulness. All these elements; lights, costumes, and choreography, worked together to achieve a good presentation that utilized the confusion of the pupil and optical lens of the eye.
An explosion of color was used in this section of the performance, as well as a black and white backdrop. This combination was an analytical challenge, because of the contrast. I simply could not see how they related. The costumes of the women were all different but the same. Confusion, I would say, was the theme of this piece. I simply would say it was pointless, that is, if not for the choreography. The steps were a mixture of ballet, and hip-hop styles. Although ballet was the central theme for the whole dance, it was linked to modernity through the utilization and integration of hip-hop styles. This collision of the modern and the classical gave way to the use of space in a way that was not yet displayed in the performance. The dancers were very spaced away from one another, and stayed in the space in which they were placed. I notice that at times, one dancer was set to invade these different spaces, in a way that created a somewhat imbalance on-stage. This is similar to our class discussion of space, in which we said that space can drastically alter perception.
As the concluding section, this was the one I critiqued the hardest. The women were all dressed similarly with subtle differences, while the men were dressed the same. The base for this piece was ballet and ballroom dancing. In sections of the dance each dancer got a partner, in which they had to rely on one another for the dance. This concept to men, was an interpretation of the classical, and the section maintained this theme by consistently crossing these two styles. In the end of the performance, gold sparkles fell from above, and added an intense feeling of mystery to the performance.
