Hunter leaned against the doorway and smiled. Omega hadn't noticed him yet, too focused on her task. She had her headpiece on, probably listening to the book file she had gotten from Tech. Her head was cocked and she was squinting at the material in her hands, which were folding over themselves as she worked. Pabu has hit the coldest time of the year, which still was bearable with a little poncho but the random bouts of rain had Omega inside more often than not. Surprisingly she had picked up the skill from Crosshair, who usually preferred to be inside and under a blanket. It hadn’t taken her long to master it on her own, which wasn't unusual but still a bit shocking to watch. Crosshair had grumbled but looked proud at her progress.
Hunter broke the quiet clicking of hooks, “Echo said he'll be here before dinner. That's 1700.”
Omega huffed, hooks clacking together a bit faster, Hunter chuckled, “You gonna be good kid? We can stall him. Though he's here for a few days,so you have time.”
“No I'm close to the binding off-” At Hunter's questioning look she rolled her eyes playfully, “it's when you close off the end piece and secure it so it doesn't unravel.” She paused and held it up. “I want him to have it for the cold.”
“ I think the colors nice.” Hunter commented as Omega eyed it critically.
She pulled it back into her lap, “You think so?”
“I know it, he'll love it.” Hunter peeled himself off the doorway and turned around. “ I'm going to get Wrecker from the docks and start dinner.” He started towards the door, “ 1700!” he called back.
“I know!” came an exhausted reply which had Hunter lips twitching upwards as he opened the front door.
++++++++++++++
Hunter heard them before he saw them, Tech’s excited babbling mixed with Crosshair's tired drawl, Echo's voice halfway between. He looked out from the kitchen window where he was deboning a fish, watching their heads appear as they made their way up the steps outside. Echo caught his eyes and sent him a smirk, waving his scomp once. The weight on Hunter's shoulders lifted at the sight, only to fall back down on them as Wrecker leaned in from behind.
“I have a knife.” Hunter yelled, half a threat and half a warning, which was of course, ignored.
“ Echo!!” He belted, and Hunted kicked out lightly at the sound, his behemoth of a brother only grinned, pulling away to run to the door as it opened.
There was a cascade of sounds as Hunter washed his hands, before moving towards the voices. Echo wheezed as Wrecker held him aloft before he was set down and pulled into a hug. Hunter couldn't help a small inhale, but their wayward batchmate smelled as healthy as always. He pulled back to Echo's knowing look and shrugged.
Before he could get a word out, a much higher but sweeter voice was calling Echo's name. Omega's golden hair was all Hunter saw as she threw herself into him. Echo grunted but hugged her back fiercely.
“Missed you kid.”
“ I missed you too Echo. It's been so boring-” She coughed at Tech's displeased hum. “But…you know…safe-” Crosshair wiggled his hand in a so-so gesture, “ time.”
Echo chuckled warmly, “ Well that's what we want. I suppose.”
Omega looked uncharacteristically shy then, pausing to glance at Hunter, who felt his heart swell.
“You finish your gift?”
Omega nodded, and looked back at Echo, “ I made you something, I learned it from Crosshair-”
“That feels vaguely ominous.” Echo teased, Crosshair huffed and crossed his arms, Wrecker chuckled.
Tech held up a finger, “Actually it is a relatively safe hobby - unless one thinks of the continuous motion and carpal tunnel-”
“Tech.” Crosshair reached over to cover his mouth. Tech squinted at him but paused the spiral of thoughts they'd no doubt hear about later.
Wrecker pushing Omega's back lightly. “ Go on Omega. He probably wants to have it tonight.
Omega breathed out and pulled out her gift from the pouch of her oversized sweater, “I knitted this for you. You always seem cold.”
Echo blinked and pulled the scarf from her hands, it was so soft in his hand, the material a rich blue. When he turned it over there was a small five in white patched into the last piece before the end of one side. He felt his throat close as he ran a thumb over the number.
“Is it..okay?” Omega asked, gently.
“It's-” Echo cleared his throat as his voice caught, “- it's uh-great kid. I love it.” Omega beamed as he pulled it around his neck, hugging his side. Echo breathed out quietly, shakily.
“Don't worry, Wrecker cried when he got his gift too.” Crosshair said suddenly. Wrecker gasped.
“You said you wouldn't tell him!” He yelled. Crosshair looked unrepentant.
“I lied.”
There was a clatter as Wrecker dived towards him, Tech moving away swiftly as Crosshair ‘oofed’ and was thrown over his shoulder.
“Wrecker-” His voice cut off as Wrecker turned and threw Crosshair onto the large couch, then a loud “wait-” as he followed. Hunter ignored the sound of wood splittering in favor of turning to Echo.
“Welcome back.” He said. Echo smiled over the top of the scarf.
