Maybe don't start with the Netflix version

I doubt I have much reach here, but to the handful of people who do follow me, Bee and Puppycat is great, and if you haven't watched it you totally should, especially now that it's been picked up on Netflix! Only, maybe don't start watching it on netflix, because while the new three episode recap that preceeds what is actually the second season on Netflix is great for bringing people who watched the original series on youtube back up to speed, it misses out on a lot of the charm of the 2 part pilot and first season of 10 shorts, all of which you can still find on the 'Cartoon Hangover' youtube channel.

For some reason, probably some dumb rights thing, the pilot and youtube episodes are not on Netflix. When the netflix release was announced, it said the first season was being reanimated, but apparently they didn't mean reanimated /as/ a season, but rather truncated into three episodes, after which the previously leaked but not officially released second season proceeds as normal.

The three rehash episodes are worth watching for anyone who already saw the original show, they're good, they look great, they change some things about the original releases that became retroactive continuity errors, like the kind of house Bee lives in or the fact that Deckard likes to cook but can't bake. They're especially worth watching because they add several neat new subtle details that will likely be relevant if the show ever gets a third season.

However, a lot of what was great about the first season is lost in these three recap episodes. The dreamy, laid back pace is somewhat lost. Which is maybe a bit odd, because the netflix episodes are enough longer than the individual shorts that the total run time isn't that much less, but the episodes still feel like they're rushing through plot points, instead of the hazy drifting experience of watching the youtube episodes. As a result, the eventual shift in tone towards the end of the first season isn't as noticeable. There's also a lot of subtle buildup of key plot reveals in the youtube shorts that are significantly less subtle in the neflix recap episodes - almost to the point that the netflix episodes feel like they're literally intended as a recap for people who watched the original show years ago, and aren't intended for new viewers at all.
