A new mother of premature twins receives gentle coaching and support from volunteer Lactation Consultant, Allika Alce, in the NICU at Hospital St. Therese. Throwback to my favorite photo of myself nursing in public when my girly face was two months old. Whenever someone posts in one of the (many) Facebook mommy groups I'm in, asking about nursing discreetly in public, I whip out this photo and a little blurb about loose, high cut tops with tank tops underneath and not needing any kind of cover to breastfeed modestly in public. I am passionate about breastfeeding and I take that passion public because the reason there are issues with breastfeeding in public is lack of exposure. If everyone who breastfeeds would do it out in the open, most people wouldn't be uncomfortable with it (and it wouldn't even be notable) because it would be NORMAL. I am passionate about breastfeeding in public (and all over social media) to help normalize it, so that other women might see and be comfortable feeding their own children in public without hesitation. Motherhood is difficult and stressful enough without having to find someplace to hide whenever your baby needs to eat (i.e. every few hours and often at the most inconvenient time) or needing to wrangle a fancy/expensive/cumbersome cover over your baby's flailing limbs. Not to mention trying to plan your outings around your baby's eating schedule or pumping before leaving the house so you can bottle feed while you're out. I'm sure those things work wonderfully for some people, but even thinking about the logistics of any of the above options gives me stress-induced hives. I knew I could breastfeed discreetly in public because a frum woman once posted a picture of herself doing just that in one of those Facebook groups I'm in. I post pictures of myself nursing in public with the hope that I might be that woman for someone else. #normalizebreastfeeding #feedallthebabies #anytimeanywhere #throwbackthursday

Happy World Breastfeeding Week! What words do you use for nursing in your house? We say "la" (breastmilk), "la-ing" or "la her up" (verb for nursing) and "las" or "la las" (breasts). I'm all about using and teaching anatomically correct terms for body parts from a young age, which we do, but I think our made up words are adorable and it throws back to my childhood, when my family referred to breastmilk as "la." 😂 I love hearing the words other families use! #worldbreastfeedingweek2017 #worldbreastfeedingweek #feedallthebabies #la-las #motzeishabbosfun

I got some questions for you all: Besides the person feeding the baby, what is different in these two pictures? Why is one "hype" and the other not? Why should one be "private" and the other not? Why is anyone shamed for either? Ah, there's one you didn't expect! Yes, I've seen mothers who choose or who can only bottle feed be shamed. Why? Why are we shaming anyone?! Feed your child the way you want, share it with the world, if you want. Keep it to yourself if that's your choice too. Want to know what I see when you share a picture of your child, eating or not? I see a precious moment you wanted to save. I see a precious moment that you wanted to share. These two pictures are precious moments I chose to share. Don't like it? Don't want to see it? There isn't much milk in this bag. It's approximately 45 Oz actually. But I am so excited that I am giving it to a mama who needs it. Something I've always wanted to do was be able to donate milk, because there was a time when I needed some for evan and a dear mama gave me some of hers for him.
