Don't Feed Candy to the Sheep

So that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. (Ephesians 4:14-16 ESV)

Humans have the ability to make things that are not important, important. They also have the ability to make things that are important, not important. In a local church a biblical leader is tasked with teaching God’s word. It is very easy to teach things that seem to be helpful, but don’t actually help the congregation be transformed by Jesus.

There is a temptation in teaching a local congregation to give them a little bit of what they want to hear so that they will be inclined to want to hear you the following week. Over time this temptation grows stronger. Eventually the leader finds himself teaching messages that sound good, sound biblical, sound helpful but are completely void of Jesus. Absent is the transforming work of the Holy Spirit and Jesus’ work of changing you day-to-day. Messages become simply a copy of whatever the people want and whatever is most popular.

The body of Christ stops working properly and is no longer growing in love. The church is no longer sensitive to the love they have for their city and seeing people meet Jesus. The church is too preoccupied with becoming familiar with what they love, they have no time to learn how to love others.

This situation is similar to when you feed a child a steady diet of candy and fast food. They will love it and love you for it, but they will become unhealthy and unproductive.
