8 years ago on this day I sat down at a table and started cutting out paper dolls to entertain my 2-year-old daughter. She was amused for a bit but I became completely obsessed!! I immediately imagined a story and character for each one. Throughout history, women have been given stereotypes in the lyrics they use and the stories they tell in their songs. The most heavily used stereotype about song lyrics written by women is that girls only sing about their desire for a man or their love for a man. This directly applies within society because a stereotype that is heavily applied to women is that they cannot survive without a man. One example of a singer whose songs are used to represent the stereotype is Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift is known for her songs written about boys in general, and also specifically about her previous lovers. Many people use her specific music to stereotype all women’s lyrics. One representation of this in Taylor Swift’s song “Our Song” because she is singing about how she is in love with a boy and their love creates a song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb2stN7kH28

Gender stereotypes in music are also represented through the appearance of women. The most evident stereotype is the sexualization of women. Whether on an album cover, in a music video, or on stage, women are most often seen in revealing clothing and dancing in provocative ways. Additionally, in music videos women are typically presented as doing sexual actions or dancing with other people in somewhat sexual ways. This is a stereotype because the most important part of a musician or singer is their music, however women are forced into these provocative outfits and movements in order to sexualize them and make them more appealing, despite their ability to appeal to fans with their talent. Despite all of the many stereotypes against women, there are many that are defying them. By wearing the clothing they choose, creating their own images, and writing whatever songs they choose, these prejudices are destroyed and proven wrong. The strongest examples of defying stereotypes through music are Demi Lovato, Kelly Clarkson, P!nk, and Kesha. Demi Lovato does this by singing about being strong, independent women who do not need men, and by choosing to dress and make herself appear however she chooses. Kelly Clarkson does this by wearing whatever she chooses and singing about women standing strong and working together to accomplish anything they choose. P!nk defies stereotypes by singing about whatever she chooses, not just boys, and by dressing however she likes, whether she is wear a suit or a dress. Last, Kesha is a strong example of defying stereotype, especially recently, because she was forced into doing things against her will by her producer Dr. Luke for many years. She fought to be released from her contract and released from his grasp. After a long struggle, Kesha came out on top and released a song and album about her experience and about women being in control of their lives.

For some reason I've had the song "Gold Digger" by Kanye West stuck in my head for days. Fun fact: In 2010, this painting, also titled Gold Digger, became one of the first paintings of my Paper Dolls Series. "Girl" & "Welcome to Your Gender Workbook"

After reading "Girl," by Jamaica Kincaid, I realized there are many guidelines females have to follow for others to accept them as feminine figures. The "rules" that are in the text consist of ways to keeping a house neat and tidy, activities that females should know how to do in order to be a good homemaker, and being reserved so others do not mistaken certain acts as being flirtatious or promiscuous. After reading Kincaid's work, it is safe to say girls and women are expected to behave accordingly in order to satisfy the society's mentality on how females should act. Culture and society have a HUGE influence on gender.

  "Welcome to Your Gender Workbook," by Kate Bornstein was extremely enjoyable to read!! I found Bornstein's experience and exploration on gender to be really interesting and would love to read more about "hir" life. As I was completing the Gender Aptitude questions, confusion as well as curiosity surfaced..I was unsure of my own answer to several of the questions. After adding up all the points and reading my GA Level, I found the description to be accurate, which helped me gain a better understanding about myself.
