hi y’all!

as a few of you might know, i write for feministing.com, a badass feminist website that is predominantly staffed by women of color. we are an independent and lefty publication that’s been trying relentlessly in the current political climate to address topics like women workers, immigration, militarism, and transphobia, all from an intersectional feminist perspective. 

we might shut down. feministing is entirely a labour of love, with every single member and editor having another full time job, making it really hard to be sustainable. 

2017 has shown the critical need for alternative voices in the media, particularly women and woc voices. for every new york times article humanizing and celebrating neo nazis or allowing literal war criminals to advertise forever war, we are going to write something celebrating and advocating for the marginalized. please help us do this and throw a couple of $ our way if (and only if!) you can spare it! <3 no pressure at all: even if you don’t, please consider checking us out sometime.

The relentless imperative to “hurry up and heal” is an appeal to smooth over your rough edges and Move On. Get back to being a productive member of society. We hear it everywhere from our homes to our college campuses to the streets of our burning cities. I urge you to set aside your pain and engage in productive steps forward. Performing our survivorship benefits the privileged (who seek to remain comfortable in their ignorance) and the powerful (who are deeply invested in managing the anger of the marginalized). The compulsory transformation from victim (unproductive) to survivor (productive) serves an imperialist capitalist state. . . . I don’t know what to call myself these days. Victim/survivor feels inadequate. I want new language. I want new structures and systems and institutions that affirm and support vulnerability, instability, and anger.

Today's Article Round up (Part 1?)/The Spunky Feminist Recommends!

It's a little early for a roundup of everything I've read today so I might put out another one, depending on how much else I read. 

BUT

I did find a great website so I thought I'd combine a recommendation with a roundup!

So recommendation first: 

Feminsting.com is a website run by young feminists (I'm not 100% sure of their ages I'd say they range from 20's to early 30's) that covers a lot of topics surrounding feminism. A lot of their articles have to do with pop culture, politics, ect. Bascially anything you'd want to know about feminism today they have articles about it. They also have a pretty sweet twitter. The really great thing about their website is that it offers a safe space for writers who aren't on their staff to post their ideas about feminism on their community page. If you want some more information about them, here's their About and their FAQ. (Psst: they have a really strict policy about antifeminist, racist, ableist, and basically any -ist negative comments so, as far as I've seen it's legitimately a safe space)

This culture may not be our fault, but it is our problem to fix. It is time for Andover’s athletes to find new, constructive ways to bond and develop team camaraderie—not ones based on conquering dances and competitively targeting females, not by prodding teammates to “hook-up” and teasing those who don’t. The definition of “cool” doesn’t have to be a traditionally masculine figure who objectifies their sexual partners or who climbs their respective social ladders through hook-ups.

A Letter to My Cousin, One of the ‘Good’ Guys

We need to be seen as people in public spaces, not exhibits for men to vote on with cheers as we walk by. I need you to support me and tell your friends that the way to approach me for a date is to tell me how smart I am, engage me in a conversation, ask me how my day is going – all before telling me that I’m pretty. You need to help stop this culture of degradation of women that leads to violence, rape, and death. One in three women will be abused at some point in her life. It has happened in our family, and it starts with this culture.

Because after the dust has settled, the reproductive rights have been won, the pay is equal, and there’s equal representation in Congress, the mission is only half complete if sexism still dominates our social spaces. You can say the structural stuff is more important, but it’s the everyday stuff that reinforces the structural stuff that adds up to a clusterfuck of mind-numbing oppression. And so many of us are guilty of allowing ourselves to perpetuate it without ever taking a moment to see the damage we’re doing.
