RoyEd Week 2026 Day 01: Sports AU

I had two sports au fics, but I wasn't able to finish writing either one of them, so I doodled this to give myself an excuse to yap.

The story is that Edward is a middle school chemistry teacher, and he accompanies his homeroom class on their end of the year trip to a baseball game (to commemorate their last days before high school). Ed thinks that baseball is boring as hell, so he brings a book and readies himself to read the entire time. But Ed sees player number 52, Roy Mustang, come up to bat, and it’s love at first sight. 

Roy is athletic, his ass looks great in his uniform pants, and his smile on the jumbotron makes Ed weak in the knees. On the bus ride back to school, Ed decides that he has to see Roy again. 

So Ed goes to another one of the Central City Alchemist’s games, and because he doesn’t teach during the summer, he just keeps on going. And it’s a pretty good time- he sits in the stands, eats yummy stadium food, works on his lesson plans, and yells absolutely ridiculous insults at Roy as a means by which to get his attention. Hughes is on the same team as Roy, and sometimes he’ll tap Roy on the shoulder, point to the stands, and be like, “Your blondie’s back again.” 

Roy actually finds Ed’s heckling amusing, and he throws Ed a ball once (which then becomes Ed’s most prized possession). He loves Ed’s attention- Roy waves at him and motions from afar like, “I’m dedicating this home run to you.”

But all good things have to come to an end, and Ed has to go back to his teaching job. One day after school, Ed is sitting at his desk grading papers when he gets a call from his work phone, and it’s none other than Roy. How did Roy know where he works? It’s because Elicia is one of Ed’s former students who he took to the original baseball game. Elicia could tell that her teacher was head over heels for her godfather. 

Ed stammers his way through exchanging pleasantries. “Um, uh, ha… uh, how… how have things been?”

“I have to admit, I’m not playing as well without my lucky charm around! I suppose I’ll have to spend the off season sulking all alone… at the restaurant on 4th Street at six o’clock this Saturday...” 

And of course, Ed goes out with him (and takes his poster of Roy off of his wall before Roy sees it).

On that night Ed knew Truth. He also knew himself. A life, just like this one. A loving mother. A distant father who screwed everything up, first when he promised Ed's hand in marriage on accident and again when he'd tried to annul said marriage after Ed had gotten to know and love the man. A few days later Ed's husband in all his glory walked into the room. Colonel Mustang. The Flame Alchemist. The destruction to Ed's creation. The Hades to Ed's Persephone. And he didn't recognize Ed.

FE RoyEd Week 2026: "Sports AU"/"We can't keep doing this"

Roy Mustang was the youngest signed player in AHL history, having been picked in the draft by the 'Central Alchemists' at just seventeen years old. He made headlines all over the country when he controversially declined their offer of captaincy three times, and then signed with the objectively worse 'East City Rabbits' the moment the Alchemists no longer held his rights. He finally took a captain position a year later and won the cup his first time out as leader: taking the Rabbits to glory for the first time in AHL history.

Since then things haven’t been going his way. Six years of middle-ground playing have made his name a joke. So he’s desperate for a comeback this year. Unfortunately, this is also the year Elric, nineteen, rough around the edges and definitely not a team player, joins the Rabbits. Elric seems hellbent on ruining Roy’s dreams, because the two of them simply can’t get along – let alone play good hockey together.

Except first impressions can be deceiving, and Roy comes to learn that he and Ed are actually a lot more compatible on the ice than Roy expected.

And, as it turns out, off the ice too.
