Charles Leclerc’s Austin Undercut Could Be Ferrari’s Best Weapon
Charles Leclerc’s Austin undercut could turn one sharp Ferrari pit call into crucial track position at COTA in the 2026 US Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc may not need a dramatic wheel-to-wheel pass to gain a position at Austin. Ferrari could make the decisive move while his rival is still circulating on old tires.
The undercut becomes especially powerful at the Circuit of the Americas because fresh rubber can immediately produce lap time when a driver rejoins with enough clean air. That places enormous importance on Ferrari identifying the correct pit window and Leclerc delivering an aggressive but controlled out-lap. Stop too early, and the new tires may have to survive longer than planned. Wait too long, and a rival could make the first move, eliminating Ferrari’s opportunity to steal track position.
Traffic complicates the calculation even further because fresh tires offer little advantage if Leclerc rejoins behind slower cars through COTA’s demanding opening sector. Ferrari therefore has to think beyond the pit-stop time itself. Pit entry, tire warm-up, the out-lap, and the available gap on track all become parts of one strategic move. At Austin, one perfectly executed lap after a stop could accomplish what several laps of attacking in dirty air cannot.
