"weather vain"
My first thought is that they decided it was a little unbecoming for Mr. Weatherbee to be commenting on a high school Junior’s physical attractiveness – we are veering into the Mad parody from 1954 where he chases after them. If there is no real change on that score – and maybe the meaning of “fetching” gets bumped over by dent of a Miss saying it? – call it a stumble. (Once upon a time "used to call", now just is). But as things play out, actually the re-writers are setting up a trilogy. And this is the origin of “Wacky Wear Week”. Further reprint, sticking with Veronica's new pants and Weatherbee's pink shirt, and the "Wacky Wear Week" gets wiped out and Weatherbee moves from "pretty" to "nice". And Grundy goes back to referencing "fetching" as a word from the past -- everything old is new old again.
