It's almost 2am - apologies if this isn't as coherent as it should be!
He felt like he was drifting in dense fog. All his senses were blurry, and he had to concentrate hard to pull things back into focus. A hand rested lightly on his cheek, fingers brushing hair back from his forehead, and someone was speaking. A familiar voice. A brother.
“Hey. Hey! Are you still with me? Don’t you dare close those eyes. I need you to stay awake. The others will be here soon.”
Though spoken quietly, there was so much desperation in the words. He tried to look up into the face of the brother who was cradling him across his lap, but his vision remained foggy. He wanted to ease his brother’s fretting, but his limbs felt too heavy, his mouth refused to open, and his voice failed him. He wasn’t even sure he could draw a deep enough breath to support the speaking of actual words. But his brother seemed to understand that.
“Just focus on staying awake, okay? That’s all you need to do until they get here. Just keep your eyes open and listen to my voice.”
The hand that had been against his cheek shifted and warm fingers closed around his cold ones, his brother’s thumb rubbing circles on the back of his hand.
“Have you heard the story about The Watcher? Or The One Who Listens? Some say he’s like an angel – a lone sentinel somewhere up in the heavens, always watching, always listening. It’s said he can hear even the faintest prayer - that if you’re in trouble and you cry out to The Watcher he will hear you, and he never ignores a plea for help. I know better. I know he’s no angel, but he comes damn close sometimes.
“I know how much it hurts him to think that he might miss even a single voice crying out in desperation, or when he hears but cannot do anything to help. And I know there are times when he listens to the last moments of those who are beyond help, aching to be able to do more. He offers what little comfort and reassurance he can so they don’t feel alone at the end. Those moments are hard on him, but he doesn’t let on.
“He directs the rescuers to where they’re needed and he watches over them as much as he does those who need rescuing. And at times that can be painful too.
“He does so much more than watch and listen, answer the cries for help, comfort the helpless – so much more than anyone would believe of just one man. But I know. I know sometimes he feels like he does it alone, and sometimes that’s just another way he tries to protect others. Especially family.
“Yes, he has family. He doesn’t have to do it all alone – doesn’t have to take all the emotional weight of the world on his shoulders. He should confide in his brothers more. They understand and they want to help – it’s what they do.
“The Watcher is human and right now he needs help, but he’s not alone. John, your brothers are here. We’ve got you. We’re gonna get you home safe.”
