I've always wanted a Final Fantasy X comic book, so what if I made one?

I digitally painted these first 2 pages over the long holiday weekend. I'm really happy with the way they turned out! I have 22 more pages planned!

The opening of FFX is so funny.

You start off as a football player trying to get to the field from your fancy boat house but the fan horde is too dense. A guy on the radio keeps talking about your deadbeat and presumed dead dad who was EVERYONE'S favorite player. Like the whole country still talks about him.

Then the stadium gets blown up. A bomb? Did the fancy equipment break? Wtf, your head hurts.

You stumble out and run into your godfather. Guy's been a drunk bastard and wore the weirdest outfit as long as you can remember but whatever he's still a good guy. He said he was waiting for you instead of running to safety like a normal person. Okay, fine, probably just worried.

But as you rush through the broken streets you see a massive ball of water in the sky hanging like a new moon. But worse because it is way too close. Some weird... thing? Hits a skyscraper and a horde of fragment shells fly off and land in the streets, each as big as yourself and it's not like you're short so holy shit and they unfurl into monsters?!

Uncle Drunkass rambles something vaguely ominous and apocalyptic (is he in a cult...?). Gives you a giant fish hook that apparently your dad got you? You two fight your way to safety even as more of these giant murderspike things rain from the sky. In spite of never holding a sword before in your life but hey maybe that's the adrenaline and stress or maybe you're just a natural.

Then the road breaks and instead of helping you up, Uncle Drunkass says something about stories and destiny, grabs you by the throat AND the sphere of water turns into a HELLISH SPHINCTER OF FEAR AND DEATH and Uncle gets absorbed into it like it's a black hole made of light and meat and you go next because the bastard was holding tight onto you.

Then you wake up in a pile of ancient waterlogged ruins, rescued by weirdos on a ship, and then find out you're in the future and everyone thinks your home city is holy or something and you can't say shit about it because they all think that the hell sphincter which apparently is a giant doom monster has mindscrew toxins that you either got mega soaked in or somehow avoided for like a thousand years. So they all think you're nuts. And also your dad was here first and died sacrificing his life to save the world so you still have to live up to his legacy even in this weird maybe-future world.

God damnit.

Sucks to be Tidus.

Something I really love about FFX is that while the story is largely about Tidus coming to better understand his father the game never shys away from Jecht's flaws or tries justify them. The game makes it very clear that while Jecht had good intention he still ended up hurting Tidus a great deal either with his drunken antics or by just straight up emotionally abusing him. The game also doesn't shy from the fact that Jecht's abusive actions were often done for the sake of his ego rather than a misguided attempt to toughen Tidus up. This refusal to whitewash Jecht and his action is ultimately what makes the dynamic between him and Tidus feel so real. Their relationship is complicated and messy, with Jecht straight up just not being a good father for most of Tidus's childhood. And that is what gives their characters and the game's emotional core so much depth.

Magic The Gathering x Final Fantasy - Spoiler Season Part 21 (14/05/2025 - Jecht and Vincent)

This post is literally just talking about Jecht and Vincent. Yup. Let's get to Jecht, Reluctant Guardian and Braska's Final Aeon

Mono Black makes a good amount of sense for Jecht. Cocky, arrogant and all-around not a great guy. I know he means well, but he is ultimately also abusive towards Tidus... so you know.

4 mana for a 4/3 is slightly below rate, but it isn't too bad. He also has menace, so he will get in somewhat regularly. His ability is whenever Jecht deals combat damage to a player, you may exile it, then return it to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control. Neat, so this guy doesn't really have an ability in his normal form. 4/3 with menace.

Let's talk about that transformation then, Braska's Final Aeon. 7/7 and menace for stats, so hits harder, is tankier and just as evasive. Its abilities are:

Lore counters 1 & 2: Each opponent discards a card and you draw a card. So the first turn this becomes a cantrip effect, as it replaces itself as a card in your hand. The second turn this becomes card positive. However, unless you are playing against 3 graveyard shenanigans decks, this will absolutely be target for removal, since no one likes having to discard a card, unless they were already well over the amount of maximum cards in their hand.

Lore counter 3: Each opponent sacrifices two creatures of their choice. So even more of a target on this thing. If it does go off, good amount of removal by being able to remove 6 potential threats. Good stuff.

This is a difficult card to rate. I'll immediately say: don't bother in 60 card formats. The front side doesn't do anything but be a good enough evasive creature and the backside is so telegraphed, it will be murdered. For commander... definitely not as your commander. He doesn't do anything and unless you plan on winning the game before he pops, automatically sacrificing him yourself is so rough and needing to recast him will feel awful. In the 99 of a deck I think he will be a lot better. What type of deck? Honestly, go wild. It is a small card draw engine and removal piece, you can use that in almost any deck.

Now for the art. Credit to Michael MacRae. Link to their ArtStation. I love the contrast between the super bright Jecht art and the significantly darker art for Braska's Final Aeon. Also love that you can see the party that is ready to fight Braska's Final Aeon on that art, though they are tiny. Great arts!

As for the alternative art:

Credit to Tomohito. Link to their Twitter. That sure is Jecht and Braska's Final Aeon in a different art style, a bit more classically Japanese inspired. However, that contrast is still there of the brighter Jecht art and the darker Braska's Final Aeon art. Also love that you can see Sin in the background of Jecht's art. Very nice!

Let's move on to Vincent Valentine and Galian Beast!

Black for Vincent makes perfect sense. Brooding, edgy and distant. Also, a literal assassin, since he worked with the Turks. Fair enough, though I think there is argument for him to be White and/or Red in addition to Black, so White/Black, Black/Red, or Red/White/Black.

Anyway, 4 mana for a 2 is definitely behind rate, however he can grow... very quickly even. His abilities are:

Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, put a number +1/+1 counters on Vincent equal to that creature's power. You're opponent playing a huge Green creature they got to 20/20 and it dies? Vincent is suddenly a 22/22. Yeah, this is pretty awesome. Even better if you are able to board wipe while keeping Vincent alive with indestructible, he will be massive.

Whenever Vincent attacks, you may transform him. Very easy way to get to transforming him and keep in mind, since this doesn't exile, those counters you got from the first ability stay equipped.

Now let's talk about Galian Beast, his transformation. Trample and lifelink, so evasive and gets you life back equal to the damage it deals, very nice. Also, it's a 3/2, just a bit more power. It has a very simple ability: when Galian Beast dies, return it to the battlefield tapped. Keep in mind that this does trigger any death effects, any "if a card leaves your graveyard" effects and any enters the battlefield effects, since the card comes back as a new instance of Vincent Valentine. Neato!

I will say, I don't think 60 card formats care for this guy. Comes in and does nothing except maybe grow if your opponent's creatures die. Maybe might be a side board piece against sacrifice happy decks. For commander, I think this kind of rules, simply because there are going to be more creatures on the board and if they die, Vincent grows. I actually think he works well both as a commander and in the 99 of a deck. What type of decks? Vincent is pretty open ended, so pretty much whatever, but in the 99 of a deck, I'd place him in a +1/+1 counters deck.

Now for the art. Credit to Norikatsu Miyoshi. Link to what I think is their Twitter? It is linked on their pixiv. Those sure as Vincent and the Galiant Beast. The effects make it almost seem misty or dream like, which is cool. Aside from that, not much to say, just a pretty cool art!

As for the alternative art:

Credit to Murakami Hisashi. Link to their Tumblr. These are significantly less interesting versions Vincent and the Galiant Beast. They look pretty cool, but nothing really screams out as something that wants to tell a story... these are just portraits. Pretty good looking portraits, but portraits nonetheless.
