Mitsukiki Week 2023 Playlist for Day 3: Longing by @mitsukiki-festival
This one started out as Mitsuhid-ace playlist but then I used the day’s prompt and “Head vs. Heart” themed songs to find lyrics that fit from Kiki’s point of view too. Both Mitsuhide and Kiki work through their feelings for each other throughout (with plenty of waiting...), but it all works out for the best as they remain friends and knight partners.
Hearts and Minds
Tried To Fall In Love (My Head Got In The Way)- Kevin Devine
Friend Hospital- Nada Surf
Capital Karma- Manchester Orchestra
Art Talk- Fialta
For Me This Is Heaven- Jimmy Eat World
No One Says You Have To- Kevin Devine
Summary lyrics are cited after the cut:
Tried To Fall In Love (My Head Got In The Way)- Kevin Devine
Tried to watch the band but my head got in the way
Who was the stranger
Moving around inside my life?
Could he account for
The blankness that blanketed my eyes?
What was the answer?
Where was the pin to pick the lock?
Why was I waiting?
When would I finally wake up?
I tried to fall in love but I couldn’t get past my pain
I tried to fall in love but my head got in the way
Friend Hospital- Nada Surf
We are traveling daily by the hour
Moods clouding mountains ideas like towers
Choosing sides, digging in, then changing
Hearts and minds are chafing from all the rearranging
So much better that we're not together
Cause I will not lose you
Or be the blues to you
Friend hospital
Wild sadness knew weakness
Capital Karma- Manchester Orchestra
I defended your drama
I'm a heart, you're a brain
All I wanna do is wait for you
Now you're craving your karma
Where'd it go? And what'd it say?
Am I losing my patience? I feel it
I'm afraid that you know, you can see it
Let me stand by the door, let me breathe in
I forgave myself, so forgive yourself
I'm not trying to stand in the way
I'm in love with whoever you are
Nothing here is gonna take that away
It is you and it's been from the start
Art Talk- Fialta
Two kids, stuck in this city
Blonde hair always stuck in our eyes
Try as we might, we could not predict the outcome
Though we tried
Plotting is a gift we both deny
We stood in line still both of us pretending
And we left confused at why they changed the ending
But I guess it’s fair
And then one day, you said that you were leaving
And you said to wait, I waited for a season
But you never came, I guess it’s fair
For Me This Is Heaven- Jimmy Eat World
The first star I see may not be a star
We can't do a thing but wait
So let's wait for one more
And the time's such clumsy time
In deciding if it's time
I'm careful but not sure how it goes
You can lose yourself in your courage
When the time we have now ends
When the big hand goes round again
Can you still feel the butterflies?
Can you still hear the last goodnight?
And the mindless comfort grows
When I'm alone with my big plans
And this is what she said gets her through it
If I don't let myself be happy now, then when?
No One Says You Have To- Kevin Devine
It gets so lonely inside my mind
I'm surrounded in love all the time
I get stuck in simple phrases
Complicate straight lines
If there's a knot that don't need tying
It gets distorted inside my mind
Isolation, disconnection
Another person's life
I say, "I can't race forever.
Can't raise the rock so high."
She says, "No one says you have to.
Let go and take your time."
An Obiyuki Week 2022 Day 2 Playlist (for @snowwhite-andtheknight)
Dug through some old ocean/deep sea themed playlists and found songs that perfectly fit the selkie and home themes! Didn’t initially think about the story when arranging the songs, but the bittersweet songs could represent Obi being concerned about selkie Shirayuki wanting to return to her previous life in the ocean where he can’t follow...
As you guys know, I always put my favorite songs in the playlists so I can listen to them non-stop and this playlist would be a good introduction to all of my favorites!
Submarine Symphonika- The Submarines
Tides Change- The Hush Sound
Waves that Rolled You Under- Young Summer
Down By the Water- The Decemberists
Marvelous Things- Eisley
Is It Safe- Matt Pond PA
Waltz on Water- Copeland
Palm Reading- Fialta
Under the Tide- CHVRCHES
Deep Sea- Snail Mail
An Obiyuki Week 2022 Day 2 Playlist
Summary lyrics are posted after the bonus mermaid Shirayuki!
Submarine Symphonika- The Submarines
Say what you will
Love finds you even when you've given it up
But now that you've promised never again
It's exactly when you'll fall in
You say home's where you'll be
But soon your own sweet love
Who needs you will be lying in your arms
Tides Change- The Hush Sound
The tides changed, it's time to go home
The waves said I should go
The wind began to blow and the water got tall
And that's when I went home
Going back to the boat
With fresh oars, I will row
Going back to unknown
This SOS will never reach the coast
Waves that Rolled You Under- Young Summer
It was all a thrill
I got locked in but I had to go
The balcony was closed, but our minds were open
Go on and touch, don't think too deep in
Don't be so scared of the things you love
Diving into waves over deeper waters
Fools from far away close enough to fall in
Well I never could say what I wanted
I never could see the waves that rolled you under
It hits me still when you're distant
Out there alone
While the world is stretched we go
But this time holding strong
Down By the Water- The Decemberists
See this ancient riverbed
See where all the follies led
Down by the water and
Down by the old main drag
The season rubs me wrong
The summer swells anon
So knock me down, tear me up
But I would bear it all broken just to fill my cup
Marvelous Things- Eisley
Dark night, hold tight
And sleep tight my baby
Morning light shall burst bright
And keep us here safely
I followed a rabbit
Through rows of mermaid-entwined shrubbery
Oh, lying in the sun
Everyday feeling all of the magic in life and the wonder
Is It Safe- Matt Pond PA
Let's go for a swim
Out into the waves
When the lifeguards leave
It's ours for the day
Let's feel like we're brave
Let's give it some meaning
Even if it is shallow
Even if it is fake
It is safe as long as
I see you way out in the water
With no thought of going under
We could be out here for hours
Lying in the sand I fall asleep
And dream of the summer
When we'd slip behind the pool
And go with nature
If you're looking for something
Out in the waves
At least it is something
You know that you're safe
It is sound as long as
I see you way out in the water
With no thought of going under
We could be out here for hours
I see birds above the waves sit on the air
And wait for something
I know someday I'll be done with all this waiting
Waltz on Water- Copeland
Step lightly, we might sink in
We're waltzing on the water now
I'm drowning here on solid ground
We're fumbling on our common ground
I'll step lightly lest I grow tired
Of the search for the cure
For apathy, was it her?
But by the time she returned
I was fast asleep, come lay with me
'Cause I can't slow my dreaming
Palm Reading- Fialta
Wading out into the ocean
As you read the palm in my hand
Lazy holiday in motion
Sifting all the salt from the sand
Many hours you sing for me, you know what I like
Will you have the time, will you wait for me?
Under the Tide- CHVRCHES
I'm watching you run
Run from the sidelines
Take in a breath, fill in your lungs
Keeping you alive
No fear, I'll be your eyes
I'll be your lifeline
And if I can be, I'll be your strength
And it won't be long now
Head up, head up
Keep holding, holding
Don't you take another step away from here
"I would go anywhere with you"
What a lie
I'll break down, but you will never see
Tell me, are you happy?
Are you really happy?
Deep Sea- Snail Mail
Deep sea dive
Got down, but you stayed alive
It's only you down there
You and the bends
Lose your mind
Lose track of breathing in time
It's only you down there
Sleep with the tides
We can be anyone
It took so long to know someone like you
And age in the dying sun
Wake only to bathe in greens and blues
All the years you spent alone inside your head
You never even said a thing about it
When you’re ready
Leave it there, leave it now
You’re never gonna change
You never think you’re ready
When you give up your ghosts, I’ll be here
I have made a place for you here
And I know every word they say
And I know they want to make you change
Change if you want
But don’t you go and change for me
I can love you as you are
I didn’t mean to make you want to leave
It’s a fight between my heart and mind
No one really wins this time
-Give Up Your Ghosts- Fialta and No One Really Wins- Copeland (for Day 2: Leaves/Change for Mitsukiki Weekend by @mitsukiki-festival)
A Playlist for Mitsukiki Weekend 2022 by @mitsukiki-festival
Took a similar approach as this past year’s Obiyuki Winter Challenge and made lyric mash-ups for the prompts! Focused on the snow and cold themes and ended up adjusting the fall prompt to represent “change.” I’ve been wanting to use “Witness Me” and “Give Up Your Ghosts” in a Mitsukiki playlist for a long time and only recently realized that “23” could read like a back and forth between them. (It feels blasphemous to put “23” in the middle- pun intended- but at least I added another bonus long Jimmy feels song that fades out at the end of the playlist.)
Witness Me- The Dear Hunter
23- Jimmy Eat World
Give Up Your Ghosts- Fialta
No One Really Wins- Copeland
By My Side- Copeland
Brothers on a Hotel Bed- Death Cab for Cutie
Just Watch the Fireworks- Jimmy Eat World
A Mitsukiki Weekend 2022 Playlist
Summary mash-up lyrics for each day’s prompt are posted after the cut:
Day 1: Wish (Witness Me- The Dear Hunter and 23- Jimmy Eat World)
My spirit has been drifting for years
In secret, as a narrative appeared in plain sight
An identity I hoped could entertain
But the valley between who I am
And who I want you to see
Is too vast to bypass
I won't always love these selfish things
I won't always live not stopping
It was my turn to decide
I knew this was our time
You'll sit alone forever if you wait for the right time
What are you hoping for?
I'm here, I'm now, I'm ready
I won't always love what I'll never have
I won't always live in my regrets
Day 2: Leaves/Change (Give Up Your Ghosts- Fialta and No One Really Wins- Copeland)
All the years you spent alone inside your head
You never even said a thing about it
When you’re ready
Leave it there, leave it now
You’re never gonna change
You never think you're ready
When you give up your ghosts, I’ll be here
I have made a place for you here
And I know every word they say
And I know they want to make you change
Change if you want
But don't you go and change for me
I can love you as you are
I didn't mean to make you want to leave
It's a fight between my heart and mind
No one really wins this time
Day 3: Cold/Snow (By My Side- Copeland and Brothers on a Hotel Bed- Death Cab for Cutie)
I turn to see my faded tracks in the snow
I've come so far with no idea where to go
And if I never fear to be more alone, I do now
I need you to tell me you'll be right by my side
When I feel alone, you'll be right by my side
I don't look back to spot where I fell
Don't you look back, and don't you ever tell
You may tire of me as our December sun is setting
Cause I'm not who I used to be
Turned your way and saw something he was not looking for
Both a beginning and an end
On the back of a motorbike with your arms outstretched
Trying to take flight, leaving everything behind
But even at our swiftest speed
We couldn't break from the concrete
In the city where we still reside
Cause now we say goodnight from our own separate sides
Like brothers on a hotel bed
Bonus Day: Fireworks (Just Watch the Fireworks- Jimmy Eat World)
Here, you can be anything
And I think that scares you
I promised I'd see this with you now
I said it out loud over and over
Just enough so I can hear you
I'll stay up as late as it takes
Their third single from their upcoming album, San Luis Obispo, California quartet Fialta share single “Omg”. Fomenting a louder, grungier aesthetic than their previous works, the Fialta channel the aura of a nerd-rock anthemic influenced by the likes of bands like Phantom Planet, Weezer, Miniature Tigers, and Bleachers. Gassing with the gunning kick of its revving guitars and staccato punch, “Omg” resonates to the howling emotion of its generational malaise and echoed by the reverberating delivery of frontman David Provenzano’s whooping call. Speaking about the track and its recall of younger, more innocent times, David had this to say about their latest work:
“With this track we wanted to have fun with embracing some of that relatable, satisfying, funny nerd-rock we listened to in the early 2000s. It’s a grittier, more raw direction than we’ve taken in the past as a band. It’s about millennial malaise; about our generation waking up and realizing we aren’t so young anymore, just kind of feeling tired and over it. But I think a lot of people, no matter their age, can relate to that sentiment right now.”
“Omg” is preceded by the gentle guitar bucolic and flowing ease of “Made It This Far” and the ABBA-inspired disco of “Modern Hero” which sees vocalist Sarah Shotwell take the vocal lead.
