You write so compassionately that I wonder how you can do so if you say you've never had compassionate adults in your life? You clearly have a lot of emotional intelligence (I was going to say for the fic assuming thing), and I wonder how you got there without that? Feel free to ignore if that's too intrusive.
honestly like... not to get too into it, but me mum's a generationally traumatised narcissist and dad was undiagonised/untreated bipolar while I was growing up. there was never room for a compassionate adult, because outsiders were dangerous and threatened the status quo because they might've said something about how bad it was if they saw our home life. so I learned how to show 'compassion' there: be someone's therapist, anticipate someone's moods before they went nuclear, handle things for my little brother, etc.
and as a result I was actually really not compassionate or kind once I left home? like I was an insular wee prick for most of my late teens/early 20s, who didn't think about how my actions would affect others because I was so deep in being Hurt and Sad after I got out. and I see now that it was kinda inevitable but also like... I think I became compassionate because my upbringing made me the opposite, if you see what I mean? like I came out of that environment so fucked up and looking inwards that I had a word with myself at some point and was like, you've got to stop thinking you're the start and end of the world.
I did that thing where you keep a friend/partner up all night because you need to talk one too many times and realised I was being a prick and taking advantage of their kindness, venting my mental health gubbins where they shouldn't have been burdened with it. and yeah... I think I just kinda learned from there onwards.
if you can't model kindness from someone then you have to teach yourself to be kind, I think? same thing with compassion. I think perhaps I'm good at writing compassionately/writing compassionate characters because I've had to unpick it at a bare bones level and figure it out for meself?
this was such a ramble, jesus wept.
