No. 1. Toilette de ville en voile beige et pékin de soie beige et rouge. — La polonaise se développe devant en tablier drapé et derrière en une longe basque à gros plis. La manche large est serrée au poignet par un bracelet rouge. Mantelet en dentelle beige à pans étroits et bouffants sur le devant.

No. 1. City Ensemble in beige voile and beige and red striped silk. — The polonaise style unfolds at the front into a draped apron effect, and at the back into a long basque featuring deep pleats. The wide sleeve is gathered at the wrist by a red cuff-band. A beige lace mantelet features narrow, puffed panels at the front.

No. 2. Toilette de promenade en taffetas à reflets changeants rose et bleu. — La casaque Louis XV s’ouvre sur un gilet en faille ciel échancré et portant un coquillé de dentelle à l’encolure. Tunique drapée haut, relevée derrière en pouff. La jupe est garnie devant de plis retombants soulignés de dentelle à plat et derrière de gros plis.

No. 2. Promenade Ensemble in iridescent pink and blue taffeta. — The Louis XV-style jacket opens to reveal a sky-blue faille waistcoat, cut low at the neckline and adorned with a shell-like ruffle of lace. A tunic, draped high, is gathered at the back to form a puff. The skirt is trimmed at the front with cascading pleats—accented by flat-set lace—and at the back with deep pleats.

Description

Reverend Thomas Gisborne was an Anglican priest and poet who inherited Yoxall Lodge, Staffordshire, in 1779 after the death of his father, John Gisborne (1716–1779). He married Mary Gisborne (née Babington) (1760–1843) in 1784. Both are depicted as sitters in this painting, which was painted about three years after their marriage.
