Nature journaling is more than an art hobby. It is a revolutionary learning and communication tool. As a communication tool it can help distill and illuminate the important scientific and environmental work people are doing. On my recent trip I tried to nature journal while people were doing fast paced technical work. It can be challenging. I’m trying to get better at it because I want to test whether nature journalers can be integral parts of scientific expeditions. I tried (and failed) to get @natgeo to support the idea with a grant this year. Despite not getting the grant to test nature journaling as a valuable addition to a scientific team I am still doing the project. I’m doing as much of the project as I can with my own funds( supported in part by my YouTube and patreon)This recent Baja trip was actually a bonus opportunity to test the applied aspects of nature journaling in a rigorous field expedition setting. Real science was being done, field conditions were challenging, and I had a limited understanding of the project going in (I actually thought we were on the gulf side of the peninsula for the first 12 hours 😂). These are all real world challenges likely to be faced by nature journalers accompanying scientific expeditions. Here is a page that I did while perched in the rocky intertidal zone trying to capture the essence of the work. #naturejournaling #science #fieldscience #baja #sketching #stillmanandbirn #terrapeninsular #intertidal #intertidalstudy (at Baja California, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdLw2_Xl7WD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
