Just curious - if somehow a costume is damaged (a damage so serious that it cannot be saved) do the costume department have a spare for it? If that's the case, how many spare costumes do they have?

If talking Broadway or West End, many-many-many-many-many:

Broadway evenmore so than West End. Mainly because they in the UK frequently strip costumes of decorations to re-use for others, and the costume base to be re-sewn for a new wearer. They can do this because they have an in-house costume workshop. In the US most is made out of house, and so they usually store the costume “as is”, ready to be gently fitted to a new wearer. Needless to say, the photo above is from the US warehouse. And also, that’s Sarah Brightman’s original Broadway Aminta costume hanging in front. 30 years later, and it’s still there.

Both West End and Broadway has been running for some 30+ years. Obviously that’s resulted in a LOT of costumes, even though they re-use as much as possible, and things eventually get worn out.

For productions with a smaller time-span it absolutely depends. It depends on whether they’ve gotten everything made new (think Las Vegas), or if they inherit a stock of costumes (think Germany, Denmark, World Tour). In Denmark, for example, they have a bunch of vintage Stockholm costumes, but they also have some extra ones supplied from Switzerland/Belgium. And on top of that they’ve made some new ones if the principal’s size/fit demands it. It means they have multiple of each costume, often in wildly different styles. Same goes for Germany, where they have original German ones, vintage Dutch ones, as well as newly made ones. Looking at the costume racks in these countries is like looking at Phantom history. Here’s a selection of wedding skirts spanning from 1990 to 2015, photographed in Hamburg:

(for some reason all examples above is Christine costumes - probably because the role usually is double cast and with many, many costume changes, so they simply have a lot of the Christine costumes. But what’s written above also applies for the other lead roles and ensemble roles)
