I like to come up with fictional States

Gulielma (GU): gill-yell-muh, Deep South, colonial, confederate, has a high opinion of itself, named for King William IV.  Solidly Republican.  Zip codes between 2xxxx - 3xxxx (analogous to Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, and Louisiana)

Quapaw (QP): kwaw-paw, midwestern, middle America, generic small towns with white picket fences and mom & pop shops, protective of its 1950s image. Swing state and reliable bellweather.  Zip codes between 4xxxx - 6xxxx (analogous to Ohio but further west, more like Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, etc. Named for a tribe in Oklahoma/Arkansas)

Serena (SE): suh-ree-na, southwestern, used to be part of Mexico, lots of old forts and railroads, UFO sightings and conspiracy theories.  Swing state, but not an important one.  Zip codes in the 8xxxx range (analogous to Nevada, Arziona, New Mexico)

New Essex (NS): northeastern, New England, possibly Ivy League, even higher opinion of itself than Gulielma, throws around phrases “upper class,” “old money,” and “nobility.”  Solidly Democratic.  Zip codes between 0xxxx - 1xxxx (anlogous to New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, etc.)

United States Trading Card Game

Instead of monsters, each card represents one of the fifty states.  Their costs are based on their area; bigger states require more mana to be played, mana taking the form of literal land cards.  Attack and defense are based on population and density; high population states can deal a lot of damage, but high density means they’re more easily targeted (defense is inversely proportional to population density).  Maybe elements are based on biomes/climate; Michigan is ice themed, Florida is water themed, Nevada is fire themed, etc.

To ensure there’s enough cards, each set is based on a different census; Florida 2010 is a different card than Florida 2000.  Ohio 1970 has a higher population than Ohio 1910, so it’s more powerful, at the cost of population density.  Virginia 1860 is bigger and has a higher population than Virginia 1870 because West Virginia split off from it.  Hawaii and Alaska weren’t added until the 1960 expansion, and there are rumors of Puerto Rico being introduced in 2030, etc.

I have no idea if this would be at all balanced, or even playable, but I’m gonna give it a try.  Over the next few days/weeks, I’ll try and construct some sort of game out of this mess of information.  Maybe I’ll have a mechanic where the states’ power is derived from the Electoral College, so there are different factions; Blue, Red, and Purple states.  At this point, I’m putting the cart before the horse.  First and foremost, I need to figure out if this idea even holds water.  I’m gonna make a spreadsheet.

The other day someone asked me why I was bothering to learn all the different Pride flags. She seemed to think it was ridiculous how many of them there are now. I didn’t have an answer that satisfied her, but I think I’ve got an answer now.

There are fifty states in America. That’s a lot of names and places to learn. Recognizing the shape out of context, knowing roughly where they belong on the map, spelling them correctly, learning a little about their history, culture, industry; “Iowa Stubborn” and “Don’t Mess with Texas” and so forth—that can seem like a lot. Some people wouldn’t bother. Most people choose to forget after the last test on state capitals in school.

But every one of those states has people living there. Every state has an identity. Everywhere is somebody’s home. Some people might belong to more than one state, or have lived in many during their lifetimes. These identities and cultures matter. It’s worth learning a little about them.

And that’s how I feel about Pride flags. Maybe only one or two of them feel like home to me, or maybe I still haven’t quite found where I belong. But they all belong to someone, and so they all matter.
