Sapete cosa sarebbe veramente figo?
Figata!!
Figata is a regional word of exclamation, but used everywhere especially by young people. For what I noticed, in the central/southern area of Italy is more common as “ficata” (but it might be more mixed than I think). At times it is used with an ironic tone. It is generally translated as “cool”, “sweet”.
You can find it alone or introduced by che (=so, that’s so) as a reply to a cool news: “Mi hanno regalato una macchina nuova!” “(che) figata!” “They bought me a new car!!” “(so) cool!”
At times you can hear also the shorten versions “figo” or “fico”: these words might by used also to refer to an hot guy (che figo!=he’s so hot!) or a guy that acts like he’s too cool (non fare il figo= don’t show off). [ also the feminine version is used at times for girls, but keep in mind that “figa”/”fica” is commonly the slang for cunt/pussy, so beware ]. As “figata”, they can be used to reply to something (sono stata una settimana in Nepal | figo!!= I have been in Nepal for a week | cool! ; “troppo figo!” | too cool)
Another way to use “figo” is to explain why you do something: “perché fa figo” = because it’s cool. When you “ti fai figo” (make yourself cool/elegant => farsi figo/a) it means you dress up for an event.
The opposite of something/someone cool are, respectively, sfiga (when something goes wrong: che sfiga!=what bad luck!) and sfigato/a (che sfigato!=you’re such a looser/dork/unlucky guy/uncool)
Listen to this song’s beginning (rap part):
Fabri Fibra | Stavo Pensando A Te
“... Che figata andare al mare quando gli altri lavorano Che figata fumare in spiaggia con i draghi che volano Che figata non avere orari né doveri o pensieri Che figata tornare tardi con nessuno che chiede dov’eri Che figata quando a casa scrivo, quando poi svuoto il frigo...”
... It’s so cool to go to the sea when others work It’s so cool to smoke on the beach with dragons that fly It’s so cool to not have schedules nor obligations nor thoughts It’s so cool to come back home late and nobody asks you where have you been It’s so cool when I write at home, and then I empty the fridge...
