Joel storms in when he drops off he kids, looking angry.

Which isn't new, but Midge always enjoys avoiding that.

"We ran into Lenny," Ethan informs her before Joel can say anything. I showed him my baseball cards!"

"He gave me a hug!" Esther adds.

"Ah," Midge nods, turning to Joel. "That's why you're angry. Ethan, Esther, go play in your room." She watches them go and then turns back to Joel.

"Again with this!"

"You dropped them off a day early last week," Midge reminds him. "Which was Monday which was my date night. Lenny came over-"

"And it's Lenny!" Joel cries. "Lenny fucking-"

"Joel."

"Bruce! Dating my ex-wife, bouncing my daughter like he's her new father, looking it my son's baseball cards!"

"He was being nice," Midge tells Joel. "Lenny is a dad, too. He knows how to do dad things, too."

"He's not their dad, Miriam!"

"And Mei isn't their mother," Midge shoots back. "But she's around all the time, and she rocks Esther to sleep sometimes, and makes Ethan his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and generally looks after them like a mom would. Right?"

"I gave you a heads up!"

"Barely!"

"You didn't tell me!"

"I'm so- no," Midge stops, thinking. "Oh, no. I did tell you! You called and told me you'd be dropping the kids off a day early, and I said 'I have a date that night. Lenny will be here.' And you said, 'fine, gotta go, see you tomorrow' which means you had warning, and you didn't listen!"

They stand in silence for a long moment.

"Shit," Joel blurts out.

"Yeah."

"Fuck."

"Mhm."

"You told me. I ignored you."

"Seems like it."

"I guess I owe you an apology," he says.

More silence.

"Am I getting it today, or should I wait by the phone?" Midge asks, crossing her arms.

"Sorry."

"It's okay. Things with Lenny are getting more serious. It's new for everyone. I'm just glad the kids like him."

"Right. Cuz they like Mei, too."

"I know they do. Ethan is learning Chinese. That's pretty neat."

"Yeah."

Midge takes a breath. "Anyways. I've gotta get dinner started, and then I have a gig tonight, so-"

"Right. Yeah." He waves awkwardly. "Bye, Midge."

"Bye, Joel."

She watches him go and takes a deep, deep breath.
